The obvious reason for studying modern languages is to develop excellent linguistic skills. But there is more to it than that... Using a language is a social activity and language learning leads to encounters with people from many backgrounds. You will also develop your verbal, written and presentation communication skills. A second language is a demonstrable skill and will give you the edge on your competitors. Modern languages can be studied with virtually any other subject in a combined degree, from maths, to politics to fashion. “ “

A-level subjects  Previous experience at A-level of the particular language you want to study at university is preferred; however, at some universities you will be able to start learning a language from beginner’s level.  If you choose to study two foreign languages as a combined degree, you will usually be required to have previous knowledge (at least to intermediate level) of one of the languages

Grade requirements The main basis for this course is:  GCSEs Usually  A-levels: ABB - BBC

Entry exams  A written exam is usually taken in the particular language (if previous experience) on the day of your interview or sometimes you will only be asked to do a small task (e.g. reading & explaining a text)

Duration Structure  BA Honours without year abroad: 3 years  Or with year abroad: 4 years Modules:  Language Development (core)  Language in Practice  Language for Work  Culture & Society  Bilingual project or dissertation (Final year)

Work experience / Extra-curricular activities  Work experience in the embassy of your particular language  Work experience in BBC (in department of your particular language)  Assisting a teacher in a school where languages are taught
