How to Write an Essay Higher Modern Studies

What I will learn Identify how to write an essay.

Success Criteria Identify what a good introduction should contain. Identify different linking words. Identify how to structure a paragraph. Outline how to provide an argument in your essay.

Essay Questions Mobile phones are offensive. Discuss. What is this question asking you to do? It is asking you to challenge each aspect of the statement, giving a balanced treatment of each in terms of argument and supporting exemplification, and provide a balanced view on the statement.

Task In your groups come up with two arguments which illustrate both sides of the argument. Remember to include examples.

How to write an Introduction A good start to the answer is crucial. Good introductions succinctly point the way ahead. It is important that you tackle the question head on. Do not deliver a pre-prepared answer regardless of the question.

Introduction Mobile phones are important communication devices, however many people find them to be irritating. This essay will explore whether mobile phones are offensive or not. This introduction is succinct. Show you have understood the question. It refers to both sides of the argument.

Paragraph 1 Mobile phones have become a crucial part of modern day living. It is estimated that in Britain today the majority of people own a mobile phone. Therefore It could be argued that people believe that the mobile phone is an essential tool for everyday life. Despite this, many critics of the mobile phone believe them to be a nuisance and can be disruptive. For example, in an educational setting they disrupt lessons if they have not been switched off. To this end, some may argue that phones are offensive. (This is what we call a 'mini conclusion ' which refers back to the question- use this in every paragraph)

Conclusions Conclusions should be succinct. Shown by the following: In conclusion, although mobile phones can be very disruptive and offensive at times, they can help to make our lives easier . Your conclusion should not be a wordy repetition of what has gone before.

Five Pointers to a good answer · Integration of the skills of knowledge and understanding and analysis · Appropriate terminology · Up-to-date exemplification · Balanced and informed argument · A coherent and logical structure

Task Read over the example essay. Highlight the following: Linking words Structure of the essay How a different view is given Ways to refer back to the question- mini conclusions The introduction The conclusion Making sure the question is answered.

Lesson Starter Where does Scotland receive its budget? Outline how it is divided up. Outline the recommendations of the Calman Commission.

Essay Question QA1 2007: The distribution of reserved and devolved powers means that the most important decisions for Scotland continue to be made at Westminster. Discuss.

Can I… Identify what a good introduction should contain. Identify different linking words. Identify how to structure a paragraph. Outline how to provide an argument in your essay.
