3 Be familiar with the organization of an effective essay: Introduction, development and conclusion. Study the question carefully. Organize your ideas by using a mind map or a traditional outline. Write cohesively and concisely. Budget your time so you will be able to complete and correct your essay. Check your grammar. Use sentence structures and vocabulary you know to be correct. 4 Introductory Paragraph: states the general topic/ addresses the question directly/ shows both sides of the argument/ states the author´s opinion/focuses on a specific idea (controlling idea). 1 Developmental Paragraph(s): supports and develops the controlling idea. Conclusion: restates the topic, the controlling idea and the author´s opinion/ offers a concluding statement ( last statement). 2 3
