Vertebrates and Invertebrates I can classify animals by determining if they are vertebrates or invertebrates.

Today we are going to focus on invertebrates.

They include sponges, jellyfish, worms, mollusks, and arthropods. Invertebrates are animals without a backbone. Invertebrates are classified into many groups. They include sponges, jellyfish, worms, mollusks, and arthropods. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

Sponges Are classified as an animal instead of a plant, because they do not make their own food. Sponges eat by pulling ocean water through the holes in their bodies and filtering out the bits of food in the water.

Jellyfish Jellyfish have only one body opening. Food they capture with their tentacles enters the body opening.

Earthworms Earthworms have two body openings, one for eating and one for getting rid of waste.

Mollusks Mollusks have soft bodies, but are covered by a shell that protects them.

Arthropods Arthropods include crabs, insects, and spiders. Arthropods have an exoskeleton, which is a hard outer covering that protects and supports the body.

Now Let’s take a closer look at vertebrates! A vertebrate is an animal that has a backbone. Vertebrates are classified into five main groups – fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Fish Fish live in the water. Most have scales and fins. All fish have gills for getting oxygen out of the water. Most lay their eggs which do not have shells. Others, like sharks, have live young.

Amphibians Amphibians are born in water. Amphibians have gills when they are young, but develop lunges and live on land as adults. Toads and Frogs are amphibians

Reptiles Reptiles have scales that protect the body. They lay eggs with a leathery covering that protects the eggs and keeps them from drying out. Reptiles breathe with lungs. Snakes, turtles, and lizards are all reptiles.

Birds Birds have feathers that keep them warm. Birds lay eggs that contain food for the developing bird.

Mammals Mammals produce milk that they use to feed their young. Mammals have hair to keep their bodies warm. Most mammals give birth to their young.
