Safety in the Classroom

Overview - Safety is very important to observe and practice within the laboratory and classroom. - The following slides will be looking at the following: a). WHMIS b). Safety/Hazard symbols c). Emergency response plan

WHMIS WHMIS is an acronym that stands for: (W)orkplace (H)azardous (M)aterials (I)nformation (S)ystem WHMIS is used all over the world and uses symbols to commonly identify hazardous materials that are used in the workplace including schools

Poisonous Materials This symbol is used to show that the materials are poisonous, causing immediate and serious toxic effects

Flammable Material This symbol is used to identify flammable and combustible material. That is, material that easily catches fire.

Oxidizing Material This symbol represents material that oxidizes, meaning that when it comes into contact with oxygen it will combust.

Compressed Gas This symbol is used to represent gases that are under pressure. These are extremely dangerous because they will explode if punctured.

Reactive Material This symbol represents material that is dangerously reactive or radioactive.

Toxic Material This symbol represents poisonous and infectious material that causes other toxic effects.

Corrosive Material This symbol represents material that is corrosive. Meaning that it will break down other substances. Usually in the form of acids.

Biohazardous Material This symbol represents material that is biohazardous and infectious material.

Explosive Material This symbol represents substances that has the potential to explode if placed under stress

Emergency Response Plan If there is a situation that becomes an emergency, the following steps need to be taken. 1. Call for help!!! 2. Inform the teacher of what has happened immediately. 3. Listen to the teachers’ instructions and assist when necessary 4. All other students should not crowd the area, stand by to assist when necessary. 4. If no teacher present or the teacher is injured, call the office immediately and ask for help.

Fire Alarms Line up quietly and safely at the door, do not panic or push. Lights are to be turned off by the last person out of the class and the windows must be closed. The door gets closed behind the last person out of the class. Students will walk down the North stair case unless otherwise told and line up in the West Yard. Students need to remain quiet during this time and in their line so the staff can help organize everyone in a safe manner.
