3 First Aid in the Lab Report all accidents, injuries, and spills to your teacher immediately. You Must Know: safe laboratory techniques. where and how to report an accident, injury, or spill. the location of first-aid equipment, fire alarm, telephone, and school nurse’s office.

5 The Safety Rules in the Lab 1. Students and the teacher have responsibilities for safety in the classroom. 2. Lab is a privilege. 3. Students should wear closed toed shoes. 4. Students should tie back long hair. 5. No backpacks and no extra papers in lab area. 6. Calculator, pencil, lab sheet, and lab materials are all you need in the lab. 7. You never eat or drink in the science laboratory. 8. Lab is not for erratic behavior. 9. Students have to follow all the written and verbal instructions given by the teacher. 10. If you have a question, ask your teacher. 11. Never work along or without your teacher’s permission. 12. Personal safety equipment includes goggles, aprons, and gloves. 13. Classroom safety equipment may include fire blanket, fire extinguisher, and and eye wash. 14. PASS stands for pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep. 15. Don’t taste (eat) anything! 16. Read labels carefully.

6 The Safety Rules (continued) 17. Report any accident, injury, or incorrect procedure to your teacher at once. 18. Keep all materials away from open flames. When using any heating element, tie back long hair and loose clothing. If a fire should break out in the lab, or if your clothing should catch fire, smother it with a blanket or coat or use a fire extinguisher. NEVER RUN. 19. Handle toxic, combustible, or radioactive substance only under the direction of your teacher. If you spill acid or another corrosive chemical, wash it off with water immediately. 20. Place broken glass and solid substances in designated containers. Keep insoluble water material out of the sink. 21. Use electrical equipment only under the supervision of your teacher. Be sure your teacher checks electric circuits before you activate them. Do not handle electric equipment with wet hands or when you are standing in damp areas. 22. When your investigation is completed, be sure to turn off the water and gas and disconnect electrical connections. Clean your work area. Return all materials and apparatus to their proper places. Wash your hands thoroughly after working in the laboratory.

10 Fire Drill Procedure Exit room 333 using the main door. Exit quickly and quietly. Using the stairway directly across from room 333, walk down the stairs. Exit the building using the door located behind the stairwell Walk across parking lot to the red building Meet Mrs. Fitzmaurice at the red building. You have to check in with us at the red building. Your teacher will take an attendance You will receive a school detention if you do not check in with us during a fire drill. An attendance will be taken again when we return to room 333.

11 Internal Threat Procedure or Lockdown Lockdown – Locks, Lights, Out of Sight Lockdown is called when there is a threat or hazard inside the school building. Listen to announcements Lock all doors, lights out, and pull down blinds Quickly and quietly move away from sight in back corner of the room away from the door and windows Maintain silence Take attendance, account for students Wait for First Responders to open doors If the alarm goes off do not evacuate unless directed by the Principal or if you see smoke and/or flames Wait for an announcement, “Attention faculty and staff, we are all clear.” Normal activities are to resume.

12 External Threat Procedure Lockout Lockout – Secure the Perimeter Lockout is called when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building. Listen to announcements Recover students and staff from outside the building Increase situation awareness Lock all doors, pull down blinds Conduct business as usual within the confines of the building You may talk, but you cannot leave the classroom Take attendance, account for students If the alarm goes off do not evacuate unless directed by the Principal or if you see smoke and/or flames Wait for an announcement, “Attention faculty and staff, we are all clear.” Normal activities are to resume.
