1 SAFETY IN THE LAB CLASSROOM

2 WHMIS – Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
-Warning symbols on the container -Used to ensure that everyone has access to appropriate safety information about any hazardous substance they may encounter -8 symbols provide easy-to-read warnings. A chemical container may have more than one symbol

3

4 Compressed Gas This class includes compressed gases, dissolved gases, and gases liquefied by compression or refrigeration. Example: propane tank, fire extinguisher

5 Flammable and Combustible Material
This class includes solids, liquids, and gases capable of catching fire in the presence of a spark or open flame under normal working conditions. Example: Butane, kerosene, gasoline

6 Oxidizing Material These materials increase the risk of fire if they come in contact with flammable or combustible materials. can cause other materials to burn by supplying oxygen. Example: Nitric acid, Peroxide

7 Poisonous and Infectious Material – causing immediate and serious toxic effects
These materials can cause death or immediate injury when a person is exposed to small amounts. Example: Antifreeze, Carbon monoxide

8 Poisonous Material causing other toxic effects
These materials can cause life-threatening and serious long-term health problems as well as less severe but immediate reactions in a person who is repeatedly exposed to small amounts Example: Lead, Mercury, Asbestos

9 Biohazardous Infectious Material
These materials contain an organism that has been shown to cause disease or to be a probable cause of disease in persons or animals. Example: blood contaminated with HIV, Salmonella

10 Corrosive Material This class includes caustic and acid materials that can destroy the skin or eat through metals Example: Hydrochloric acid, Sodium hydroxide

11 Dangerously Reactive Material
These products may self-react dangerously (for example, they may explode) upon standing or when exposed to physical shock or to increased pressure or temperature, or they emit toxic gases when exposed to water. Example: Nitroglycerine, ethyl acrylate (found in paint)

12 Other Safety Symbols Many products, such as household cleaners and spray paints are labelled with another type of safety hazard symbol. Each symbol provides two kinds of warnings: Whether the hazard is the container or its contents, which is shown by the shape of the border The type of hazard – explosive, corrosive, flammable, poisonous – shown by an image at the centre of the symbol

13 Dangerous container – means the container itself is dangerous
Dangerous product – the contents are dangerous

14 Explosive This symbol means the container can explode. If it is punctured, heated, pieces can cause serious injuries, particularly to the eyes Examples: aerosol can, propane tank

15 Flammable This symbol means that the product will catch on fire easily if it is near sparks, flames, or even heat Example: Hairspray, Propane,

16 Corrosive This symbol means that the product inside the container will burn the throat or stomach if swallowed and will burn the eyes/skin on contact Example: Sulfuric acid, elemental Sodium, Sodium hydroxide

17 Poisonous This symbol means that the product will cause illness or death if you drink it. For some products, just smelling or licking them is enough to cause serious harm Examples: Antifreeze, bleach, motor oil
