4 WHMIS SYMBOLS Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

5 COMPRESSED GAS Contents are under pressure. Do NOT puncture or store it near a heat source Examples: -Propane Canisters -Oxygen Tanks -Aerosol Containers

6 FLAMMABLE & COMBUSTIBLE Contents will catch on fire if ignited. Keep away from flames Examples: -Gasoline -Butane -Aerosol Canisters

7 OXIDIZING MATERIAL Contain oxygen and increase the risk of fire. Examples: -Hydrogen Peroxide -Potassium Permanganate

8 POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: ACUTE Can cause death if exposed to in small amounts. Examples: –Cyanide –Chlorine Gas

9 POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: CHRONIC Can cause long term health effects. Examples: –Asbestos –Lead –Mercury

10 POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: BIOHAZARD Variety of chemicals which can cause harm to person. Examples: -Medical Waste -Sewage -Decaying matter

11 CORROSIVE MATERIALS Can burn skin and eyes. Examples: -Bleach -Toilet bowl cleaners -Sulphuric Acid

12 REACTIVE MATERIALS Can react with water to form noxious gases. Examples: -Picric Acid -TNT

17 REVIEW LAB SAFETY GUIDELINES - HANDOUT General, Chemical, Glassware, Clothing, Behaviour, Spills, Tubing, Centrifuge, Thermometer, Bunsen Burner, Emergency Equipment, Waste Tour the Science lab and get acquainted with the safety apparatuses located around the lab.
