Converting from Military to Civilian Employment Presented By Sophia Alexander Stringfield

Introduction Learning to live as a civilian is often times a struggle. Obtaining a Federal Government Job can be a long and difficult journey. United States Navy Service members need assistance in learning how to land a Federal Government Job. Education on the process helps the Navy service members. Introduce the developed training session on Converting from Military to Civilian Employment.

The Training Session Title: Converting from Military to Civilian Employment. Purpose: Help Navy Service Members positon themselves to finding a federal government position. Need: There is a great demand for this training session. Benefits: Helps the service members understand how to land the perfect government job. Value: Military members will be equipped with the necessary tools to obtain employment as a civilian.

Target Audience United States Navy Service members that will retire or separate from the Navy within the next fifteen to twenty four months. Service members that have completed at least ten years of service. Participates attending the class ages range from twenty seven to forty years old. Services members have a strong desire to work for the Federal Government. Participants include males, females and people of many cultures.

Learner’s Goals The service members will learn how to create a government resume’. The military service members will learn to prepare for an job interview. The military service members will learn about the various Federal Government Agencies. The military service members will surf specific federal government websites for employment.

Learner’s Objectives The United States Navy service member will be efficient in navigating through the government websites. The United States Navy sailors will create personal user identification logins for three commonly used federal government websites. Upon completion of the training session, the learner design and create a resume that meets the criteria for a government resume. The sailor will be required learn how to upload the government resume onto the employer’s website. Sailors will identify their strengths and weakness help build confidence as the prepare for job interviews

Learning Environment The instructor will act as a facilitator on many of the activities to help develop the learner’s critical thinking skills. Focus Groups will be encouraged for many activities. Learners will interact and share ideas in an open class forum. Teamwork will be enforced for the duration of the class setting. An atmosphere of respect and trust will be the foundation.

Motivation Motivation helps to promote an effective learning environment. –Job security is a great concern to many service members. –Some sailors never had to conduct face to face job interviews. –Support and encouragement from facilitator and peers will be implemented. –Strengthen interpersonal motivator indicators.

Instructional Strategies Scaffold Learning – a process by which the learners will given great hands on support and then gradually encourage to finish the resume’ on their own. Independent writing will be encourage to help develop critical thinking skills. Role Playing Sceniors will help the sailor prepare for job interviews Activities that help focus on real life situations.

Instructional Technology To promote learning the instruction will uses various forms of technology: –Power Point Presentations –Online Software Applications –Smart Boards – Hands on Computer Training

Training Sessions Occupants Limited number of seating. Intimate time is dedicated to learners that need extra attention. Reduce tension or anxiety. Trainer is able to monitor and observe the learning behavior of the participant. Trainer is able to management and control the learning environment more effectively.

Training Sessions Schedule Training Session will last five business work days. Training Sessions will be offered the first week of every physical quarter. Training Session is available upon a first come, first serve basis up until the 20 seats are filled. All training material will be supplied: –Training Booklets –Computers –Writing Utensils

Training Session Layout Day 1 - Introduction, Lecture on Federal Government Agencies and how to choose the right one, group discussion/activity on sailors desired goals. Day 2 - Lecture on how to writer a government resume’, create a formal government resume’. Day 3 – Surf and upload the government resume to the three most commonly used government websites. Day 4 – Lecture on how to prepare for a job interview, Role Playing Scenario. Day 5 – Wrap Up, Tie up any loose ends, Question and Answers Sessions.

Assessments Sailors will be expected to provide feedback for the duration of the training. - Last ten minutes of the class will be decided to addressing the needs and concerns of the training. - Learners may submit their views for the course discretely by placing their concerns in a locked suggestion box. - Instructor will review the feedback to determine if any adjustments need to be made so that the military service member’s needs will be met.

Evaluations Training Session will continue to focus on ways to improve and meet the needs of the sailors. Types of Evaluations Given To the Navy service Members: –Surveys –Questionnaires –Focus groups

Conclusion The training session is designed to : –Equip the service members with the necessary resources to obtain a desired federal government position. –Build the Navy service member’s confidence on how to write a government resume. –Leave a lasting impression on employers after the job interview. –Fulfill the self- fulfillment satisfaction in knowing that they continue to protect and service their country.
