Chapter 4 focuses on skills-related fitness and considerations during training to reduce risks of injury and help athletes perform at their best.

Chapter 4-1: Physical Activity And Skill-Related Fitness 1. Physical activity can take place in many forms. A. 2 main classes of physical activity: 1. Life Style Activities = forms of physical activity that are a normal part of routine/recreation that promote good health throughout a lifetime. - provide social & physical benefits, any activity that works all the body’s muscles. Basketball, walking the dog, raking the leaves, etc.

2 Main Classes Of Physical Activity Cont. 2. Sports Activities = activities involving competition & are guided by a set of rules. A. Individual Sports: skill oriented, individual, sometimes called lifetime sports. More likely to become a lifetime routine, golf, swimming, biking etc. B. Partner Sports: activities requiring a partner, tennis, racquetball, ping pong. C. Nature Sports: interaction with elements of nature, surfing, rock climbing, sailing.

II. Choosing Physical Activities -Choose a variety of activities -Alternate activities to work different muscles & body systems. -A variety helps reduce chances of injury. -A variety helps alleviate boredom. -Less chance of becoming inactive.

III. Skill – Related Fitness 1. Characteristics: - regular physical activity develops skill-related fitness. - contributes to your total health.

III. Skill-Related Fitness Cont Basic Measures Of Skill-Related Fitness 1. Agility (side shuttle) control body movements & change body’s position quickly. 2. Balance (balance on stick) ability to remain upright while standing still or moving. 3. Coordination (stick toss/catch) using 2 or more body parts together well. 4. Speed ( short sprint) move a distance or complete a body movement in a short time.

III. Skill-Related Fitness Cont. 5. Reaction Time (yardstick drop) rate of movement once a person realizes the need to move. 6. Power (standing long jump) ability to use force with great speed.

IV. Important Things To Remember -Different sports require different parts of skill-related fitness. -Most sports require varying degrees of several skills. -Some people have more natural ability in skill related fitness than others. -Everyone can work to improve physical skills. -Finding which skills you do well, can help you decide which sports/physical activities are best for you.
