Bellwork: March 7 th 1.The area now known as Israel used to be known by another name. In 135AD, the Romans renamed this area ______________. 2.People known as Palestinians follow which religion? 3.Turn in your textbook to page 423 and look at the map. What is unique about the location of Jerusalem? When you are done, read about Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

Jerusalem Jerusalem, a city in Israel, is holy to three monotheistic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The Western Wall is the holiest site of Judaism. The Dome of the Rock (pictured) is one of holiest sites of Islam. Jerusalem is also very important to Christianity because Jesus lived, taught, was put to death and resurrected there. Western Wall Dome of the Rock

Islamic tradition says that the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven from the spot marked by the Dome of the Rock. Tradition speaks of the Prophet being taken from Mecca to Jerusalem on a winged horse and then being lifted to heaven where he was shown by Allah when and how to pray, one of the five pillars of Islam. According to Jewish tradition, the rock that is the center of the Dome of the Rock is the site where God told Abraham to bound his son Isaac for sacrifice. That was only a test for Abraham, though, God provided a ram to be sacrificed instead.
