2 Vocabulary Monotheism: The belief in a single god. Religion:
People’s belief and practices about the existence of nature, worship or a god or gods.

3 Judaism Origins: According to the bible, God promised that Abraham would found a great nation in Canaan. Abraham and his people had to obey God. Beginning date: 2,000 BC Followers: Jews Important people: Abraham, the father of the Jewish people, Moses, a prophet, or messenger from God, Jacob (later known as Israel) was Abraham’s grandson

4 Judaism Beliefs: Ten Commandments, system of ethics
Place of Worship: Synagogue, Temple Number of followers: about 17 million Holy book: Torah God: Yaweh

5 Judaism Holidays Passover: Israelites escape from slavery in Egypt to freedom. Hanukkah: Rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in ancient times. Rosh Hashanah: Beginning of the New Year. Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement; to seek forgiveness for wrongdoing.

Christmas-Birthday of Jesus, Easter-Most important day, believed to be the day Jesus rose from the dead. Good Friday-The day Jesus was crucified. Number of followers: 2 billion Places of worship: church, chapel Book: Bible, Tanakh (Old Testament)

8 Christianity Origins: Arose from the Roman province of Judea. Christianity is based on Jewish tradition. Beginning date: A.D. 35 Followers: Christians Important people: Jesus, the Messiah, Paul, known as Saint Paul, Roman Emperor Constantine Beliefs: Jesus was the Messiah chosen by God. Jesus was put to death by crucifixion, or nailing to the cross. God resurrected Jesus, or raised him from the dead; proof of eternal life. Trinity is the existence of God in 3 forms; God the Father (the Creator), God the Son (Jesus), the Holy Spirit

10 Islam Origins: In the Arabian city of Mecca, Muslims believe Muhammad saw the angel Gabriel, who brought a message from God. Later received more messages. People followed. Beginning date: A.D. 600’s Followers: Muslims Important people: Muhammad, received messages from God God: Allah

11 Islam Holidays: Ramadan: significant religious observance. Muslims are required to fast from sunrise to sunset during the holy month. Time for prayer, reflection and self restraint. Number of followers: about 800 million Places of worship: Mosque Book: Quran

12 Islam Beliefs: Muslims follow the 5 basic Pillars of Islam. They are an essential part of Muslim life: 1st: The declaration of faith 2nd: Praying five times a day 3rd: Giving alms 4th: Fasting during Ramadan 5th: Pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime(Hajj)
