Assessment

The Student Affairs Mission To support a student-centered learning environment that encourages student development and inspires student success

A process of gathering, reviewing and using data and evidence to be able to implement change and to improve programs and services that enhance student learning and satisfaction

Framework for Assessment in Student Affairs

1. Learning outcomes related to / based on University goals and the strategic plan Goals and Outcomes of satisfaction from services provided to students through unit Division functions that are based on SA and University goals. Measurements within each unit should be based on best practice within each discipline 3. Vice President’s unit priorities (one per area)

Students participate in activities promoting:  Retention and Graduation  Community Engagement  Collaborations with Academic and Student Affairs  Diversity  Safety, Health, and Wellness

 To prepare students to make a successful transition to the CCSU campus community  To promote retention and graduation by fostering a sense of community  To promote the development of ethical, responsible standards among students  To encourage students to respect and appreciate individual differences  To educate students on healthy and safe lifestyles choices  To encourage the growth of interpersonal and social development of students  To facilitate active learning through collaborations with Academic and Student Affairs  To create student involvement opportunities that advance student learning

 Learning Outcomes-student learning ◦ Students will actively engage in community service projects and activities that serve others  Unit Goals-unit or national standard assessments ◦ Service Goals-tracking, monitoring  The Department of Residence Life will respond to refund requests within 24 hrs. ◦ Program Goals-satisfaction, compliance,  The Department of Residence Life will be 100% compliant with meningitis vaccines  Vice President’s Priorities (we each have at least one) ◦ DRL will increase fall and spring occupancy in residence halls ◦ DRL will increase number of incoming freshman in residence halls

 To be able to report out on our intended goals, Learning Outcomes and service performance outcomes  To be able to demonstrate continuous evaluation of services, student learning, and satisfaction  To recommend change and implement improvements based on outcomes  To be able to maintain assessment processes over a period of time, i.e. continuous improvement  To track these assessment practices and document  To demonstrate what we do to meet third party compliance, NEASC, BOR, Institutional Research, etc.

 Track history of assessment in Student Affairs  Assess what we currently track in each of our units and report out annually and semi-annually  Link Learning Outcomes, goals and service performance reflective of the work we do in each of our units  Meet on a regular schedule to review and revise goals and outcomes  Demonstrate how we have made change based on assessment outcomes  Document and publish information and findings

 All units within the Division will assess their own programs based on the Student affairs framework  All units will have Division Learning Outcomes to link to (see slide 16)  Other goals and initiatives will be developed by each unit and be based on one or more of the five areas of priority  Each unit will continue to track their V.P. priority

Set Department Goals and Outcomes Assess Goals and Outcomes Develop recommendations for improvement Implement Change Review CCSU University and Division goals/ strategic plans CCSU Student Affairs Assessment Loop J. Alicandro 10/12

 [Review of CAS assessment]?  [Tell where we’ve been]?  [Tell where we are going]?  [Etc.]

 Based on the framework, each unit will match said goals and outcomes  The goals and outcomes will all be linked in the annual and semi-annual reports ◦ In other words, if you documented something as an active goal or outcome it needs to be reported out on the Division reporting cycle  New goals and outcomes can be added, but until the cycle is complete for each outcome it should remain in reporting

1.Retention and graduation (student success) Students will actively engage in the CCSU community Students will demonstrate leadership skills through their campus involvement 2.Community Engagement Students will actively engage in community service projects and activities Students will apply sustainable practices on the campus 3.Collaborations with Academic and Student Affairs Students will express satisfaction participating in FYE and LLCs 4.Diversity Students will communicate an understanding of differences in others 5.Safety, Health, and Wellness Students will identify campus resources that will lead to healthy lifestyle choices

 Discuss/revise Division and unit intended Goals and Outcomes  Brainstorm programs or services we already offer that we can track and that can be connected to the Student Affairs Goals and outcomes
