Year 1 First Placement University of Hull BA Primary Teaching Year 1 Mentors’ Meeting June 2014

Placement within Programme Handbook p. 4 sets out key dates of this placement 4 week Summer block 15 th June – 10 th July 2015 Planning for teaching – focus on impact, formative assessment, professional dialogue. Base class as before – visits to other classes when appropriate. Trainees work under the guidance of CT. Grades against standards feed into Professional Studies outcomes Trainee mentor to attend regional partnership meeting. Placement tutor to complete one joint observation with the school mentor week beginning 29 th June. External examiner potential visits in the final week. Post-placement tutorial with Personal Supervisor.

Teaching commitment P.10 of handbook. Gives guidance to trainee as to how they manage their time In agreement with class teacher the suggested time frame is: Week 1: with guidance, plan and teach groups Weeks 2 to 4 : where possible trainees teach 40-50% of timetable Monitoring and Assessment: Identify three profile children for trainee to follow over placement

Weekly meeting and review Agree when and where with trainee at start Private, uninterrupted, appropriate length of time Questions - how do they know? What evidence? What is the impact on pupils? Weekly meeting and review form - handbook and documentation on partnership website Trainee to fill page 1 of the form in to prepare for the meeting. Consider progress, own subject knowledge, impact of training, pupil progress. Weekly review form - focus for discussion and targets feeds into the TDP as a monitoring tool for progress against the standards.

Weekly meeting to include Plan visits to other classes or key stages – use of PPA time. If possible please ensure a visit to observe phonics teaching and EYFS.

Standards Focus is on all 8 standards in discussions and meetings (TDP) Building on from the Autumn term’s experience and taught sessions, students have completed assignments linked to pedagogy and application of subject knowledge to prepare the trainee for the teaching role Professional discussions

Monitoring and Assessment Class teacher to help identify three profile children for the trainee to follow Does not need to include a child with additional needs Trainee to track these children during lessons, gathering evidence for English and Maths and using the Weekly Formative Assessment Record in handbook for lessons they have taught

By the end of the placement trainees will be able to…. The ultimate aim of this placement is that trainees become proficient in the planning, teaching and assessing of individual focused activities; they are not required at this stage to plan sequences of work They will be assessed against the standard headings, not each individual sub-statement

Placement Tutor involvement. Weekly review forms will be sent by the trainee to their placement tutor for comment. Attendance at the regional partnership meetings to moderate trainee progress with the school mentor. One visit during June block – to take place w/c 29 th June. A joint observation with the school mentor to confirm progress within the standards.
