Presentation transcript:

Directorate of Learning Resources Can I use it or cant I? For people who want to put teaching material into RADAR - and the session will also apply to putting material into Brookes Virtual Looking at using images and film and video Concentrating on images and video that you can find on the internet Looking at how to work out whether you can use the material youve found Time for questions at the end – and do contact me to follow up specific questions

Directorate of Learning Resources Does the law allow me to use images for teaching? Basically, no The law allows material to be copied for coursework and for private study, but not for teaching

Directorate of Learning Resources So can I use images from the internet? This depends partly on whether the web pages explicitly say that you can use their images

Directorate of Learning Resources Some web sites say no clearly And this means you cant use their images eg the National Portrait Gallery:

Directorate of Learning Resources Some web sites dont say And this means you cant use their images eg the Ecclesiological Society

Directorate of Learning Resources Some web sites say yes And this means you can use their images – under the conditions they set Eg the National Gallery

Directorate of Learning Resources Some web sites say yes – but can you trust them? Eg, an Advanced Google Image search allows you to limit the search to images licenced for reuse

Directorate of Learning Resources Why you should distrust a web sites permission to use images Because the advice is based on laws in a different country Because they are using unsafe interpretations of the law Because the web site doesnt understand the law – or allows contributions from people who dont understand the law

Directorate of Learning Resources Recommended image sources Links to image databases which the Library has subscribed to and other recommendations available from the library web pages:

Directorate of Learning Resources Education Image Gallery Available via the library web pages

Directorate of Learning Resources Can I use DVDs? You can show DVDs in teaching but you cant copy clips from DVDs or TV programmes to use in teaching materials

Directorate of Learning Resources Can I use film and video from the internet? Usually web sites wont give permission to download videos but you can link to the videos YouTube eg.
