How is my Degree Structured? A guide for Integrated Masters Students
Presentation transcript:

Studying Economics at Brookes – your first year

What are the title and initials of my degree? The Business Economics (BQ) degree - a single honours degree. It is not combined with any other subjects The Economics (EC) degree is a combined honours degree which is studied jointly with a second field. eg a Business and Economics (BW/EC) student is on both Business and Economics fields eg an Economics and Politics (EC/PO) student is on both Economics and Politics fields

Who is in charge of the fields? Both the EC and BQ fields are within the Department of Economics and International Business It is one of five departments in the Business School. For advice about programmes and all administrative arrangements to do with the fields - see the Field Chair Sandra Nicholson (W202 Wheatley Campus, ext 5943, The academic side of the fields is managed by the programme director Andy Kilmister (N402 Wheatley Campus, ext.5986, Both will have regular office hours advertised on PIP

How many modules do I need to take? You need to pass eight basic modules in order to graduate and you should try to do this during your first year. You need to pass six basic modules to move into stage 2 of your degree at the end of the first year. You need to pass at least three modules during the year to stay at the university.

When should I register for modules? Register for modules before they start (for this semester this means by 5pm on Friday). If you register late the module leader may well say there is no room left on the module You can delete modules during the first two weeks in which they run. If you take more than nine modules a year the University charges So do not leave modules on your programme if you are not planning to finish them. The best way to register / delete modules = PIP. If that does not work see the Field Chair.

Which Modules Should I take? If you are an EC student you must take U52002 Microeconomics 1 and U52001 Macroeconomics 1 If possible also take U52005 Economics and Society and U52003 Economic Data Analysis

Which modules should I take (continued)? If you are a BQ student you must take U52002 Microeconomics 1, U52001 Macroeconomics 1 and U50012 Accounting for Business If you are a BQ student and you do not have A-level Business Studies then you must take U51002 Foundations of Business If you are a BQ student and you do not have A-level Economics then you must take U52004 Business Economics If you are a BQ student you should take IF POSSIBLE U52003 Economic Data Analysis, U52005 Economics and Society and U51000 Critical Thinking in Business It is also a good idea to take U51001 Key Business Competencies

Which modules should I take (continued)? U52003 Economic Data Analysis is a pre-requisite for the Econometrics module at stage 2 Econometrics is important for masters degrees. This module is available to both EC and BQ students. U51000 Critical Thinking in Business is a pre-requisite for six of the optional modules in stage 2 of the BQ degree (modules relating to various areas of business and management) U51001 Key Business Competencies is a pre-requisite for the E-Business module at stage 2 which is acceptable on the BQ field.

Who should I ask if I have any questions about the fields? There are lots of sources of information and support available at Brookes: Read the field guide carefully for field structure, regulations etc. Use the Field Brookes Virtual site for information about particular modules See the field chair for advice about programmes and module choices See your academic adviser for more general academic advice
