1 MSc Studies in Economics and Finance at York
September 2017

2 Why do an MSc? The main reason to do a masters degree in economics and/or finance is to deepen your technical training. Especially relevant for those who want to work as a professional economist or finance analyst. Widen your field of potential employers . Essential for anyone wishing to continue to a PhD.

3 What is doing an MSc like?
The style of teaching and assessment for the 'taught' component will be familiar to you. Given that most MScs are only 12-month qualifications, the teaching is quite intensive, so there is not a lot of time to relax.  Most different is the summer dissertation. Most MScs require you to do a piece of independent research over the three months of the summer, guided by a supervisor.  As well as providing you with academic research skills, this gives you a good 'taster' of what PhD research would be like.
