 WSU is currently experiencing a huge number of Applications for Residences from New and Returning students.  WSU Room allocation policy highlights that  Umthatha campus can only accommodate 3439 students  Ibika delivery site can accommodate 898 students  Buffalo City Campus can accommodate 254 and BCC private residences can accommodate around 2334 beds.  Queenstown private residences can accommodate 172 students 2

 WSU has got about 24000 registered students and 99 % of these students need accommodation  The shortage of residences has created a great demand and unhealthy competition because some students sleep on the queues for days during the registration period. 3

 To mitigate this unhealthy competition, the Directorate of Student Affairs has decided to improve the process of application for residences and allocation by introducing an online system that will manage residence applications and allocations.  The use of technology in managing Res applications becomes more effective and thus overcome the manual system weaknesses. 4

 Create a system that will allow students to apply online and determine which student qualifies for a residence room within the university.  Allocate residence rooms to deserving students who meet the set selection criteria.  Eliminate the "human element" in the allocation of rooms such as "alleged money for rooms" scams that have plagued the Res Unit as reported by students.  The Directorate of Students Affairs now wants an objective process that will be done purely on academic merit. Students also "doctor" results when submitting those to Res Officers. 5

 Students collect application forms from Residence office or admission department. 7

 As per WSU Room Allocation policy, academic performance for admission into residences is as follows:  Students must have achieved entrance requirements for their chosen field of study  They must reside in places that are far from the University by at least 50km  International students are admitted automatically into residences. These may be on or off campus (Private Accommodation). 8

9

 According to the WSU Room Allocation Policy, the following conditions must be followed and adhered to:  Students must obtain the following percentages An average of 70 % to qualify for a single room 69-60 % for a double room 59-50 % for a triple room  Priority will be given to senior students and other year levels who qualify for single rooms will be considered if and when single rooms are available. 10

 Students are only allowed to stay in the residences for the duration of their programme of study  Students who only register for 2 modules or less will not be considered.  Students are to vacate their rooms at the end of each semester. Students will be given 48 hours after their last exam paper within which to vacate the rooms.  Students must return keys to the Res Officers when they vacate the rooms at the end of each semester.  Students who transgress Residence Rules and Regulations will not be considered for room allocation the following year 11

 The Residence Application System will enable WSU students to apply online.  The system will also allocate students into residences and generate various reports 13

14

 Easy access to online residence application  Online applications eliminate long queues, anomalies and unhealthy competition.  Automatic allocation of residences 15

 Inconsistence of marks from ITS  Gender issue from ITS  The system eliminate students who registered only 2 courses irrespective whether the students passed other subjects in previous years. 16

 Web Application Firewalls to prevent the following web application attacks:  Cross-site scripting  SQL injection  Command injection  Directory traversal attacks  Viruses 17
