Gettysburg Cemetery On November 19, 1863, Lincoln went to Gettysburg for the dedication of the national cemetery. The contractor bid $1.08 per body to bury the dead from the battle.

Edward Everett The featured speaker was Edward Everett, a politician from Massachusetts. He spoke for nearly two hours.

The Speech Lincoln spoke for two minutes, 269 words. But the moment has gone down in history as some of the greatest words ever spoken.

Legacy At the Lincoln Memorial, the words of the speech are carved into the wall behind Lincoln. Phrases from the speech such as “Four score and seven years ago”, “a new birth of freedom”, and “of the people, by the people, and for the people”, are often used.
