Bell Ringer What was the literal translation of blitzkrieg? What invention turned the tide in the Battle of Britain? How did the Munich Agreement reflect the foreign policy of appeasement?

Background Isolation approach to foreign affairs Isolationism: A national policy of abstaining from political or economic relations with other countries US belief it's best to stay out of foreign affairs

Neutrality Acts Embargo: partial or full restriction on commerce or trade 1935: American trade embargo against any and all countries at war 1939: Congress allows provision to allow trade on a “cash and carry” basis

Lend-Lease Act 1941: The US agrees to supply the Allied nations with wartime supplies to defend themselves against the Axis nations. “Arsenal of Freedom” Compared it to letting your neighbor use your garden hose if their house was on fire.

BREAK! Lend-Lease Act Activity

Japan and USA Background 1930s Japan invades and brutalizes Manchuria and China Seeks military and economic domination in Asia US imposes an embargo of oil and steel to Japan Increased tensions between the US and Japan

While negotiating with the U.S., and without warning, Japan carried out an air attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor

The attack at Pearl Harbor destroyed much of the American Pacific fleet and killed over 2,400 Americans.

Roosevelt's Response Roosevelt called it a “date that will live in infamy.” He asked Congress to declare war.
