What is a home? A home meets your physical needs for shelter and safety ◦ Roof protects you from bad weather ◦ Locks on doors protect you from crime Homes also meet emotional needs by giving you a sense of belonging ◦ You can express yourself freely Homes meet social needs ◦ Invite friends over Obj. 2.01: Practice ways to organize and design living space.

Key Terms Home: any place people live Houses: a single family houses, town homes, apartments, mobile homes, duplexes, etc. Private areas of the house: bedrooms and bathrooms Public or shared areas: kitchens, living rooms, dens, dining rooms, etc. Multi-use areas: like a kid’s bedroom for sleeping and entertaining Obj. 2.01: Practice ways to organize and design living space.

Floor Plan: drawing of a room or house and how the furniture is arranged. It looks like you are looking down from the ceiling. Arranging your space Using a scale floor plan helps you to arrange your furniture and storage place ◦ A certain number of inches = a certain number of feet in the room Special symbols are used to show doors, windows, and closets (blueprint symbols) You can draw a scale floor plan of your room on graph paper ◦ This saves you time and energy before moving furniture!
