Quiz 1 Semester 2 1-2

Font- a set of printed letters, numbers, and other symbols of the same style

Serif- is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol Sans Serif - sans means without in French so sans-serif means without a serif

Kerning- the space between letters and characters

Leading- the space between lines of text

Early printing was set up by people called typesetters.

They would recreate lines of text with individual metal letters.

It was necessary to write upside down and left to right.

They also needed to use special plates for kerning the letters

Strips of lead were put between line of texts. This is why the distance between the lines is called leading.

This took a lot of skill to be fast and they had to very accurate because there was no quick editing like we are used to on the computer.

Many artists have used text to express their ideas.

Robert Indiana Was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana. While in high school took art classes on Saturdays. He later went on to get an art degree and moved to New York. He changed his last name to his home state because he thought Clark was too ordinary.

1964 The original image, with green and blue spaces backing red lettering, served as a print image for a Museum of Modern Art Christmas card in 1964.

1970 Its original rendering in sculpture was made in 1970 and is displayed in Indiana at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Pablo Lehmann creates works from cut paper.

Graffiti artists are known for using words to express their ideas.

There are many styles of graffiti. This is by Basquiat a well known street artist who hung around with Andy Warhol.

This art work is created by a street artist named Bansky. Bansky has helped draw attention to the question- “Is graffitti art or vandalism?”

What is your opinion? Is graffiti vandalism or art? Is all graffiti equal? What determines if certain graffiti is vandalism or art?
