CUBISM 1908-1914

Break it down…. Inspired by Cezanne, but founded and lead by Picasso and Braque … “nothing but little cubes” . Started with Picasso’s “Les Desmoiselle d’Avignon” Subject varied, but color palette was limited to neutrals. ( Though Picasso broke a part and create his signature style that contained many colors) ANALYTICAL  analyzing form of objects by shattering them into fragments spread out on the canvas SYNTHETIC  reassemble the structure– formed new art of collage ( so Matisse wasn’t the first to do it!)

Picasso Learned to draw before he could walk- he was first an Academia artist. “ It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to draw like a child” Different periods of his life influenced his art, until he changed art history with one painting ( the same painting the start of Cubism) “I paint what I know, not what I see”– inspired by Cezanne geometric patterns ( mountain side landscapes)

Blue Period– Picasso’s good friend and roommate died- and he painted a series of paintings all in blue. Most famous “Old Guitarist” 1903-4
