2 Cubism Cubists broke objects into a multitude of pieces that were not actually cubes. The name came from Matisse’s dismissal of Braque’s landscapes as “little cubes”

5 Analytic Cubism The first of two phases of Cubism was called Analytic Cubism because it analyzed the form of objects by shattering them into fragments spread out on the canvas.

7 Analytic Cubism Picasso and Braque worked in a nearly monochrome palette. Using only brown, green and later gray in order to analyze the form without the distraction of bright colors.

9 Synthetic Cubism Braque and Picasso invented a new art form called collage. Braque’s “Mandolin” dismantles the stringed instrument only to resemble it’s essential structural lines in corrugated cardboard and newsprint.

12 Synthetic Cubism Gris contributed to Synthetic Cubism. Leger added curved forms to the angular Cubist vocabulary. Noted for his industrial landscapes full of polished, metallic shapes & hard gears.
