There are two distinct phases of the Cubist Style: Analytical Cubism (pre 1912) and Synthetic Cubism (post 1912) (introduction of collage).

His early works were labeled the blue period for the lonely feeling and overall BLUE tone.
He was said to be mourning the suicide of his best friend Carlos Casagemas

Guernica

Since its creation in 1937, Guernica has come to memorialize human atrocities in the 20th century. Picasso used images from Christian iconography and from Spanish culture, like the bull.
It was created in response two the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
