2 CUBISM The Cubist movement lasted from about 1908 to 1914 (WW1) There are many different styles of Cubist art but all represent distortions of the visible world. Picasso’s: Pipe, Glass, Bottle of Vieux Marc, 1914

3 CUBISM Cubist painting is recognised as one of the great turning points in Western Art and was developed by PICASSO and BRAQUE. The name Cubism comes from a painting by BRAQUE which was described as being composed of cubes.

5 CUBISM The artists broke down the subjects they were representing into different parts so that many different aspects of the same objects could be seen at the same time. The Cubists did not –use conventional perspective –use realistic colours –keep to one single viewpoint

6 CUBISM A cubist painting might show the front, back and side views of an object – all at the same time, making the image look very complicated

7 TWO TYPES OF CUBISM There are two types of Cubism: –Analytical Cubism –Synthetic Cubism

8 Analytical Cubism Analytical Cubism was mainly Geometric shapes and colour was subdued.

9 Synthetic Cubism Synthetic Cubism – colour became more important and the shapes more decorative with stencilled letters and pieces of newspaper being introduced
