Staff s: Grades will be based on the following scale: Dressing out30% Participation30% P.E. Assessments10% Health Class Assignments20% Health Class Assessments 10% MAKE-UP POLICY All late assignments, from the current unit, can be turned in for FULL credit before that unit has been completed. The unit is completed once the unit assessment has been given. Any late assignment can be submitted be the end of the grading period for HALF credit. We will be viewing videos to enhance the curriculum. Some of the videos will be viewed in their entirety, while some will only be viewed in clips. All videos that we use are aligned with current CCSD standards, and videos will be accompanied by a journal and class discussion. Any movie will be preapproved and rated PG. UNITS OF STUDY Semester 1: (3 wks.) Introduction to Health and Mental & Emotional Health. Semester 2: (3 wks.) Nutrition & Fitness: Reaching your fitness goals: What is physical fitness? What are elements of fitness? How do we achieve lifetime fitness? Planning a fitness program. Semester 3: (3 wk.) Substance Use: During this time we will be discussing topics like: Tobacco and your health, What alcohol does to your body, and Effects of different drugs. Semester 4: (3wk.) Disease Prevention & Human Growth: Identifies diseases and the benefits of setting personal goals for maintaining healthy lifestyles. Female and Male puberty and anatomy, avoiding sexual abuse, and HIV/AIDS education HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT WILL BE TAUGHT IN HEALTH CLASS AND ALL MATERIALS USED ARE COBB COUNTY BOARD APPROVED The syllabus is subject to change in order to accommodate class needs. PE Course Description:There will be a variety of team and lifetime sports, as well as fitness, offered throughout the year. Some of the sports that will be offered include football, soccer, team handball, basketball, volleyball, whiffle ball, floor hockey, lacrosse, cooperative games, circuit training, and recreational games. Fitness levels will be measured through the use of the FitnessGram. It includes, but is not limited to, height, weight, resting and target heart rate, curl ups, sit and reach, push ups, and the pacer. EXPECATIONS: 1.Follow directions the first time they are given. 2.There is ZERO tolerance for horse-play. 3.Students should not wander, play, or go to unassigned areas that will disturb transition and/or prevent others from a timely and safe learning experience. 4.Students are expected to come to class prepared and on time (Paper & pencil everyday) 5.Students are expected to do their class work in class. 6.All Disrespectful, Aggressive, and/or Inappropriate behavior will be referred to the Administration. 7.Students may be held out of PE in order to make up any missing assignments from the Health portion of the course. POLICIES & DISCIPLINE: Students will receive a possible 20 points a day for the categories of preparation and effort. Students are considered to be prepared when they come to class prepared with all the necessary tools to learn. In addition, students are graded on effort put forth during class. Students are expected to be actively engaged the entire length of the activity. Excuses: If the student is unable to participate due to illness or injury, a note is required excusing him/her from class. The note should state the reason for not participating, the length of time for the excuse, and parent signature. If the student must miss more than 3 days, a doctor’s note is required. Alternate assignments will be issued in lieu of physical activities. Dressing out: Everyone is expected to dress out daily. Students must change their clothes before and after PE. Shorts: gym shorts of any color; no skorts, jeans, khakis, spandex, capris, zippers, buttons, buckles, etc. NO sagging/rolling of shorts/sweats. You may wear warm-ups. Shirts: t-shirts only. The colors MUST BE WHITE or GREY. NO tank tops or shirts that are see- through and/or reveal midriff. Shoes: athletic shoes and socks only. No sandals, slippers, flip flops, etc. Boys Locker Procedure: Students are encouraged to use their lockers on a daily basis.. Temporary use - Students are allowed to bring their own lock and use the lockers on a daily basis. Permanent use - This locker will be kept for the 9 week period, and teachers will not have access to the lock code and/or key. Girls Locker Procedure: All girls will be assigned a locker with lock each 9 weeks. If lock is lost, student will be charged for lock. PE will not be responsible for cut locks, items missing, and/or items left in the locker room.
