CCSL Soccer Coaches Meeting Spring 2014

Introduction…I am here to help you and give you resources Powerpoint Coaching Courses; Youth I & Youth II + other certifications can be viewed at Register at ncsoccer.org (some courses will be offered locally in fall 2014) Goals to Accomplish

Coaching Development Licensing: px px NC Youth Soccer: National Soccer Coaches Association:

What is Your Role as a Coach? * Coach must never put the well-being of any player at risk * Coach has a responsibility to ALL players * Coach must be aware of bad Language at all times * Coach must respect ALL officials * Coach must respect all opposing coaches and players * Coach must set a good moral and ethical standard for all at all times * Coach must not show poor behavior or bad sportsmanship at any time * Coach will not allow dangerous play by his/her players * Coach will foster a good working relationship with his/her players' parents

What is Your Coaching Philosophy? Are we coaching (teaching) soccer or teaching (coaching / mentoring) kids? Can be developed over time “Catch them Being Good” Sandwich approach to constructive criticism Positive / Constructive / Positive Both of the Above are very powerful and motivational!

Tips for Communicating With Parents Set Clear Expectations from the start. Go over the following with them: * Parents will treat all players with respect and encourage a "team first" mentality * Parents will not coach -- or give instructions -- from the sidelines during games or at training * Post-game evaluations will only be done by the coaching staff; leave the coaching, and game evaluations, to the coaches * Parents will serve as role models for their child, team, coach and the Club * Parents will refrain from questioning the referee during games; parents should not engage the referees at all * Parents will not undermine or belittle any players within a team or within the League, including their own child * No alcohol will be allowed on the sidelines, during games or at training, regardless of park or tournament rules * Parents will create the best environment for ALL players in our League

Six Harmful Behaviors for Adults to Avoid in Youth Sports harmful-behaviors-that-youth-sports.html harmful-behaviors-that-youth-sports.html Should we ever be frustrated with a child for not performing a skill that they have not been taught to do? Or a skill that they are developmentally unable to perform? Is the child having fun when they are being criticized, particularly in front of other players, parents, and coaches?

It’s Only A Game! xA xA How is soccer different from other sports?

Some Sports are Coach Centered

Soccer is a Player Centered Sport

Differentiating Aspects of Soccer No time-outs Game is very fluid with many player decisions to be made by every player, every place on the field Action happens too fast to coach from the sidelines, coach cannot stop game to organize team, time / space / pressure Over-coaching causes more player errors, especially with children as constantly shouting instructions will confuse the child because the play you are talking about is in the past and the game situation has already changed. Over-coaching may work sometimes in the moment and appear successful, but over time greatly inhibits player development because the player is not learning to think for himself, but rather becomes dependent on the coach.

What is Your Coaching Style? Micro-manager Practices generally have lots of lines, play is stopped a lot, so that everything is controlled and done the right way. Shout directions continuously from sidelines during games Every player needs to know what to do, where to be, & when to be there Allow the Game to be the Teacher Players have lots and lots of touches on the ball in practice. Players are put in game-like situations so that they can learn from their own mistakes over time. Coaches teach in practice and allow the players to play in the games.

What Does a Player Centered Coach Look Like? Provides many opportunities for the player to learn, many touches on the ball, many game like activities that allow the player to learn Teaches players to think for themselves (developmentally appropriate…younger ages will require MUCH more direction and guidance in practice and in games) Focus on the experience and process rather than the outcome. Always ask, are my players having fun? (practice and in games) Half-time is for the players, not the coach! (check injuries, allow for rest, pick 1-2 coaching points, go over briefly, and your are done.) Same thing at the end of the game…save coaching points for practice. Recreational soccer is for fun, fitness, socialization…parents may have other reasons too, competition is for later stages
