Beginning of Sports and Recreation Medieval sports was said to begin back before the 14 th century. This was said by the beginning of records for sports.

Sports of Medieval Times Archery Bowls Colf Gameball Hammer Hurling or Shinty Horseshoes Jousting Quarter Skittles Stoolball Wrestling

Archery Archery contests were popular. Archery was played to have an arrow shot at a target from a distance of choice. It helped predict the outcome of wars and battles. When there were good archers it gave you good chances at battle.

Bowls Bowls was similar to the Olympic game curling You score one point for each wood that is closer to the target then the opposing team To win you had to get 21 points

Colf This was a sport made for many nobles. Like it sounds it is similar to the modern day golf sport. Since it is an ancestor of golf the rules and parts of the game are very relevant.

Gameball Gameball was a simple football game. Gameball combined soccer, rugby, and football. The ball they used was a pig’s bladder stuffed with dried peas then later it was filled with air. The pigskin could be carried, kicked, passed, or thrown into the goal.

 Hammer was a medieval throwing game.  It was a dangerous sport because of many people and other living creatures getting hit.  Though it was dangerous it brought much entertainment and enjoyment to the players.

Hurling or Shinty Hurling or Shinty was a similar game to hockey. It combined hockey, lacrosse, and some of golf, and ice hockey. They had two teams of 12 players Each game was 90 minutes long A player that once to carry the ball has to bounce it or balance it on their stick.

Horseshoes Horseshoes was a game based on throwing. The object was to throw the horseshoe and land it around the pole. You won by having the closest to the pole and if tied they had a “throw off” as they called it.

Jousting Most jousting tournaments were of knights who had disagreements. They would ride on horses with lances as weapons or other weapons like axes, daggers, and swords. Jousting tournaments were not only a great way to show off their skills but to win large sums of money.

Quarter Quarter was a game played by staff members and co-workers. This was watched by many people of the community. Quarter was played for challenges by staff for possible higher positions. Whoever won would get the placing.

Skittles Players take turns to throw wooden balls down a lane where there are several wooden skittles, in attempt to knock them over Each skittle is differently shaped There is one skittle that is bigger than all the rest and that skittle is called the king and the king is the most difficult to knock over.

Stoolball Played at religious festivals & events. Stoolball is an ancestor of baseball and Cricket. The object was to score more runs than your opponent. There were no strikes, balls, fouls, or foul tips. Outs were mad by fly balls being caught, pitcher hits home, or fielder hits home before the runner hits the base.

Wrestling Wrestling was very violent wrestlers could have been killed They wore armour that was evenly distributed over the body Wrestlers would use arm breaks, finger breaks, eye gouges, hip tosses, leg trips and various pins to get advantage over the opposing player
