S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 1 GridPP - Introduction Welcome to the First GridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction A brief History CERN's Involvement Proposal Summary Displacement DataGrid Jobs Management Structure Short Term Priorities Aims of this Meeting

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 2 A Brief History JIF Bid submitted Feb 2000 for £5.9M to fund prototype Tier-1 at RAL (Later withdrawn) JIF Tier-1 + Some Tier-2 used as input to LTSR and bid to SR2000 PPARC awarded £26M in SR2000 ('Nominally' £10M CERN, £10M PP, £5M Astro) PPARC signs up to EU DataGrid (10M total) - gives 5 'funded' (by EU) posts for UK PPARC to provide 14.8 'unfunded' (by EU) posts + Tier 1 centre as part of EU testbed

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 3 History (Continued) December GridPP Formed (RAL Meeting) March 2001 GridPP proposes uniform distribution of 16 posts to fulfil PPARC's DataGrid commitments 5 April - Ad Hoc Committee awards 6 of the DataGrid posts. 30 April - Shadow PMB established to manage DataGrid until GridPP approved. 8 May - Call for 'internal tender' for remaining DataGrid jobs 23/24 May - SPMB considers tenders. 30/31 May - e-Science Committee meets to consider GridPP proposal (and others)

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 4 CERN Involvement Shortfall in funding at CERN - people and materials –Scale of computing problem –CERN Council policy of reducing staff Ian Halliday statements to CERN Committees –Mention of £10M that could be given by PPARC –Several different statements on importance of technology transfer/dissemination Agreement to make joint bid with UK PP Groups –Reduced bid to £7M (out of £21M) –Additional £3M in value added component (out of £25M)

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 5 CERN Involvement Model: –Joint posts in IT + UK Universities –e.g. PPARC Fellows CERN Staff –CERN Salaries or UK + COLA Justification: –LHC Computing not funded at CERN - problem for UK Physics –Promotes UK visibility –Will give UK much closer relationship with CERN IT then others –Will provide large number of well trained UK people

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 6 Proposal Summary £40M 3-Year Programme –PPARC e-Science money + existing JIF/JREI + new SRIF/JREI + EPSRC Posts? Five Components –Foundation –Production –Middleware –Exploitation –Value Added Exploitation Emphasis on Grid Services and core middleware Encompasses all UK PP Experiments (+ Theory)

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 7 Proposal Summary Integrates with EU DataGrid, CERN, PPDG and GrPhyN in the US Integrates LHC developments with current programme (BaBar, D0, CDF…) - test using real data and analyses Facilities: Tier-0 (CERN), Tier-1 / BaBar Tier-A (RAL) + up to four regional Tier-2 sites Regional centres form basis of dissemination and collaboration with other disciplines Robust Management Structure Deliverables in March 2002, 2003, 2004

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 8 Financial Summary Components 1-4: PPARCExternal Funds UK Staff£10.7M £5.9M (EPSRC?) UK Capital £3.2M £4.5M (SRIF?) CERN Staff £5.7M CERN Capital £1.4M Total£21.0M£10.3M Tier-1/BaBar Tier A Up to 4 Tier-2 Mostly dissemination Need to get hold of external funds (SRIF/JREI underway)

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 9 Displacement Although there was £26M for PPARCs e-Science in SR2000 there was nothing else for PP - i.e. nothing for inflation –Severe problems with PP Physics programme in coming years (several £M shortfall) Intention was to fund people already funded by PP grants (+RAL ITD) who were working on e-Science out of new e-Science money (= Displacement) –Saves PP Physics programme –Less money for new Grid posts An extensive survey of all groups was carried out to determine how many PP people would be working on e- Science from normal grants –~ 40 fte i.e. up to £6M could honestly be displaced

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 10 Displacement Proposal was to displace £5.5M (inc £2.1M RAL ITD) i.e. Split was: New Staff £5.2M Capital £3.2M Two days before submitting the proposal we were told at the PPC not to mention displacement in the proposal –No time to change allocations –New and Displaced staff added together everywhere Split now: New Staff £10.7M, Capital £3.2M –Maybe Staff/Hardware is unbalanced? However this is safer as there is no commitment by us to displace any amount from the Grid money There is no guarantee that the displaced money would go back into the PP programme. What happens to PP programme now?

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 11 DataGrid Posts Approved in 1st round: –Bristol0.5 WP60.5 WP8 (CMS) –Glasgow1.0 WP2 –IC0.5 WP10.5WP6 –Liverpool0.5 WP40.5WP5 –Manchester1.0 WP7 + general support –UCL1.0 WP7 Currently proposing allocation of rest of posts to PPARC

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 12 Management Structure

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 13 Management Collaboration Board (Group Leaders) is established –Chair (SLL) confirmed Called for nominations to Experiments Board –BaBar and D0 confirmed so far Started process of appointing Project Leader (via sub- group of CB) Once we have Project Leader need to appoint Deputy Project Leader and Technical Board Leader Leave Dissemination Board and Peer Review Board till GridPP approved –PPARC may take over Peer Review Board Calendar of meetings being established (Tony)

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 14 Shadow PMB Set up to Manage DataGrid (allocate posts) –Interim Project LeaderTony Doyle –Interim Deputy Project LeaderJohn Gordon –Chair of Collaboration BoardSteve Lloyd –Interim Chair of Tech BoardRobin Middleton –Experiments RepresentativeDave Britton –Experiments RepresentativeNick Brook –CERN LiaisonLes Robertson –e-Science Director (in Att)Neil Geddes Structure Reflects final proposed PMB Will replace people as posts/other boards are confirmed

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 15 Short Term Priorities Till now we have (had to have) concentrated on DataGrid (essentially only LHC Experiments) –Started 1st Jan 2001 –Jobs available sooner than for GridPP as a whole Focus now must be on full GridPP (all UK PP Experiments + theory) Testbeds for existing experiments (BaBar, D0, CDF…) + LHC data challenges Assume ~2.5M available (out of £3M PPARC Total) for (see Dave Britton talk)

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction Slide 16 Aims of this meeting Bring everyone up to speed on where we are Sort out difficulties due to interim nature up to now Set agenda for first year of GridPP Focus on work we need to do Define priorities for funding What are UK strengths? Prepare for e-Science presentation next week Hopefully the qualifiers are over and the competition itself can start!
