European Exploration

Countries of Exploration ► Portugal ► Spain ► France ► England

Christopher Columbus ► 1. Columbus is an Italian sailor who wanted to find a faster way to reach Asia. ► 2. He thought he could sail west around the world and arrive in Asia faster then going around Africa. ► 3. He approached Portugal first, but was turned down so he turned to Spain, who agreed to pay for his voyage. ► 4. Set sail in 1492 with three ships, The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. ► 5. He spotted land on October 12th. He was in the Caribbean Sea (He believed he had reached the Indies, islands southeast of Asia). He named the islands of San Salvador and Hispaniola. ► 6. He made 4 total voyages and at his death in 1506 he still believed that he had found Asia.

Reasons for Exploration 1. They wanted to spread Christianity beyond Europe 2. They wanted to expand their empires 3. They wanted to become rich

Impact of Exploration 1. Slavery ► the Spanish and Portuguese turned to slavery in order to supply labor for their plantations after disease killed many of the natives.

Impact of Exploration 2. Columbian Exchange ► a movement of things from the Old World to the New World ► Some things exchanged were positive: ► new sources of food and labor ► Some things exchanged were deadly: ► diseases.

Things brought to the New World from the Old Disease: smallpox, Influenza, Typhus, Measles, Malaria Livestock: cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, honey bees Grains: Wheat, rice, barley, oats Fruits and Vegetables: Peaches, pears, coffee beans, turnips, olives, onions, grapes, citrus fruits, bananas, sugar cane

Things brought to the Old World from the New World ► Animals: Turkeys ► Fruits, and Vegetables: Squash, pumpkins, Sweet Potatoes, Pineapples, beans, corn, tomatoes, potatoes ► Other Plants: Peppers, tobacco, vanilla, peanuts
