{ Cougar Athletics Program Philosophy

1. To provide information about the athletic department for the Fall athletic season and the school year 2. Communicate expectations for our student athletes – both the school and team level 3. Provide information that may help avoid conflicts, problems, or questions that may arise during the upcoming season Purpose of meeting

The primary mission of the Colleton County Middles School Athletic Department is to provide an opportunity of involvement and/or participation for every student athletically, whether it is a competitive sport, recreational activity, or management/support opportunity. In doing this, serious attention will be devoted individually to the physical, mental, social, and emotional dimensions with outcomes including student growth in all dimensions and their preparation to make a serious contribution to his/her family and community.  Athletics are a part of the total educational program and should emphasize the “student first” philosophy  We are not a win at all cost program but realize the importance that the expectation of success can play in creating a competitive environment  Being an athlete at Colleton County Middle School is a privilege and not a right  Held to high academic standards  Behavior on and off the field/court should be exemplary  Athletes will face adversity, but that is OK  We encourage multi-sport participation among our student athletes and will emphasize working together to better the entire athletic program Athletic Department Mission

 Program Overview ( 1 st Year)  Middle School under High School League rules  Academics  Behavior  Summer Schedule  Regular Season CCMS Football 2014

 Trust that the coaches and staff are professionals and will act in a professional manner.  Be a positive role model through your words and actions  Read and sign parent contract  Read middle school handbook  For grievances please follow the proper order  1. Position Coach  2. Athletic Director ( Jay Davis)  3. Administrator (Senaca Baines) Parent Expectations

 Our #1 goal is to help create a well rounded, productive individual that will be a major contributor to their community as an adult.  To achieve this, we will not focus on the “athlete” only.  We care as much about the student, as we do the athlete.  We strongly encourage all athletes to play more than one sport.  Participating in Band, Drama, Ag, Choir, Cheerleading, etc. and athletics is a wonderful experience and all athletes will have the opportunity to do so.  The athletic program will be flexible and work with the athletes so they can participate in multiple activities.  Any work that was missed will have to made up and it will be up to the head coach on how that is handled. The Whole Child

 Total Program  Starts at the Middle School  Middle school program must be committed to building the program 1 st and winning 2 nd  The middle school program must mirror the high school program.  Must be an Athletic Program offering multiple sports, not a bunch of independents fighting for survival The Athletic Program

CCMS Athletics Football Basketball Softball Track/Cross Country Volleyball Baseball

 The middle school student athlete will be introduced to the weight room both in season and offseason as well.  The weight room is used for injury prevention first, performance enhancement second.  Weight room sessions that are conducted before school or after school are not extra. It is a valuable part of being an athlete and are necessary to the health of the athlete and the success of the program.  We will not ask an athlete to lift on game day. (Sub-varsity or varsity). The Athletic Program

 Be a part of something bigger than yourself.  Student 1 st, Athlete 2 nd  Servant leaders on campus  Be a positive example for the student body  Disciplined  Enthusiastic  Play more than one sport Player Expectations

 Discipline is something we do FOR the athletes, not something we do TO them  It has to come from a culture of being a part of something bigger than yourself  It starts with the little things… Discipline

 Standardized dress  Clean Locker rooms  Starting on time  Sense of urgency (movement)  Controlling emotions  Vertically and horizontally aligned warm-ups (helps athletes transition between sports)  Consistent language between sports (break outs)  Proper behavior in the classroom  Respectful dialog with coaches Discipline- The Little Things

 Be a part of something bigger than yourself  The TEAM take priority over the individual  The pinky toe is just as important as the heart (know your role and embrace it).  Every athlete will get coached and be given the same opportunities. It is up to the athlete to take advantage of those opportunities. Cougar Family
