Professional Registration Knowledge & Understanding Competency Development Professional Review UK SPEC highlights that there is a route to Professional Registration for all competent engineers Professional registration The Engineering Council is the UK regulatory body for the engineering profession. As such, it ultimately sets and maintains the internationally recognised standards of professional competence and ethics that govern the award and retention of these titles. In brief, to become professionally registered an individual needs to demonstrate their engineering expertise in 2 areas: 1) Their knowledge and understanding – so broadly their academic achievements which are assessed against given criteria for EngTech, Incorporated or Chartered levels 2) Their competency development including technical, leadership and communication These 2 areas are assessed through professional review – through a paper or online application form and professional review interview. The IMechE also enables alternative options and routes to membership for those who may not have the “Standard” academic qualifications laid down by the Engineering Council... For example, The IMechE has devised a formal framework for recognising ‘experiential learning’ called the Career Learning Assessment (CLA), launched in 2011. The CLA option is a way of demonstrating that, through work, underpinning knowledge and understanding has been acquired to the same level as someone with a formal academic qualification 5
