1 Use IOSH Blueprint to build a better, safer, healthier working environment
This IOSH Blueprint presentation should be used when talking to IOSH members and at network events. Each slide to follow has a prepared notes section to help guide you through Blueprint during your talk.

2 IOSH Blueprint is a competency framework for OSH
IOSH Blueprint is a competency framework for OSH. We believe it will become the internationally recognised benchmark for OSH skills and capability. Health and safety professionals, and organisations, are using IOSH Blueprint to build safer, healthier and better working environments. Using competency measurement as a baseline and IOSH Blueprint as the mechanism for measurement, organisations and individuals can work to a global standard that’s easily understood and communicated across the supply chain. By applying IOSH Blueprint as a common language and a global benchmarking tool, organisations and individuals around the world can ensure OSH competency and capability. This, in turn, will help organisations and individuals enhance and protect their reputation, and deliver their OSH vision.

3 A global framework for competence will have a range of benefits for the OSH profession, throughout organisations and across industries. We can expect improved workplace health, motivation and organisational resilience when we join together to assess competencies using a common language. IOSH Blueprint has the potential to transform safety and health across the world.

4 It enables: Assessment of professional skills, competencies, knowledge and experience Personalised professional development pathways Organisations to realise their OSH ambitions Individual and organisational benchmarking So what does Blueprint enable you to do? It gives an individual the opportunity to assess their professional skills and competencies along with their knowledge and experience. From there they can then set some personal goals of where they would like to work toward. By doing this they will be given a personalised development pathway which can support them with their own personal CPD. Organisations can use Blueprint to gain an overview of where their employees knowledge gaps are to aid with development. This can also help organisations with their own OSH strategies.

5 The self-assessment tool – key elements
There are 3 elements of the tool that can be used to: Assess the skills you feel you have and where you currently sit in the framework Set the goals showing where you would like to aim Map the pathway of how you want to reach your goals by downloading your professional development plan and accessing learning materials to support your development

6 The self-assessment tool
Once your skills have been assessed and goals have been set, you can download a development plan to guide your CPD. The self-assessment tool is accessible through MyIOSH and is available to IOSH Members; a few non-IOSH Members are working with us to help build IOSH Blueprint for Business. There are 27 different competencies for an individual to assess themselves against in showing where they are now and where they are looking to work towards. A downloadable professional development plan can be produced which in turn can be uploaded to your CPD record.

7 IOSH Blueprint offers an individual an opportunity to measure competence.
By acquiring competence, any issues of legal compliance become obsolete both for an individual and an organisation. It is also a good starting point when trying to understand where your strengths and weaknesses lie.

8 In assessing your skills and setting your professional goals, a gap analysis will show the areas which need to be developed which can then support your CPD. This can also be used to help individuals have a learning and development conversation with their line manager to help progress their own training needs.

9 It can also help map your professional pathway.
With IOSH Blueprint, not specifically aimed at the OSH professional, there is a wide range of competencies which can support a professional’s development in a number of areas. Using IOSH Blueprint as part of an appraisal process will enable an individual to show their organisation where they want to work toward. Also, this can be a great opportunity to listen to the employee’s needs, and progress collaboratively in alignment with their organisation’s vision.

10 The business enhancements within IOSH Blueprint will allow a business to capture their employees’ profile information to gain an overall picture of competence levels across the organisation. For global organisations with worldwide networks, this will help elevate different sites so everyone aspires to the same standard. The business enhancements are being piloted by global organisations and already they are seeing the benefits.

12 So far, over 6,000 people have used the tool
Here’s what some of them had to say… “I wanted our company to get involved with IOSH Blueprint so we could provide our OSH professionals with a competency development pathway that gave them a more rounded management competence, benefitting them, our company and the wider industry. The output of their assessments will link into the appraisal system, enabling them to have a more focused and meaningful discussion about their personal development.” Paul Richards, IOSH Chartered Member QSHE Director, Interserve Support Services Since its BETA Launch in March 2016, over 6000 users have self-assessed using IOSH Blueprint. IOSH Blueprint has also been adopted by large multi-national organisations, such as APM Terminals and PepsiCo, as part of a organisational pilot. It has been successfully implemented at Interserve as they understand the benefit that IOSH Blueprint can give to them as a business.

13 Elizabeth Skelton, IOSH Chartered Member
“I used it to set my development objectives at work and have a development discussion with my manager. I have encouraged my team to do the same. It’s a great tool, whether you are starting out in health and safety or have years of experience.” Elizabeth Skelton, IOSH Chartered Member “I am using it actively as part of my development plan at work. I think the big selling point is that it can help you identify an area for development that previously you may not have thought about.” Steven Osborn, IOSH Chartered Fellow For the professional, IOSH Blueprint’s easy-to-use, free, online self-assessment tool provides a personalised competency profile to benchmark where they are now, and provide a professional development plan to map their career pathway. Our members understand the benefit of using IOSH Blueprint for their own personal development, using it to activate a discussion with their line manager.

14 What are our members saying?
We are gathering information and starting to build our knowledge gaps. As seen here in the UK, legal knowledge and compliance scored very highly as skills that Members aspire to develop. Internationally, there is a more of a focus of hazard and risk management. IOSH can use this data going forward and support Members through the development of relevant learning materials.

15 What do our members want?
Our members, especially those relatively new to the profession, believe legal knowledge and hazard/risk management are the areas they need to focus on. We can also see trends based on people’s experience of working in OSH and to see where their career aspirations lead. Overall, continuing themes of compliance and strategy stand out, with strategy being more prevalent with higher rankings in those with more experience.

16 What can IOSH Blueprint data tell us?
Development plan break-down by competency and level 1/2 Charts from: CF data analysis – PDSkillReport-2 (sheet) Information currently being gathered helps us to understand where IOSH members are setting their goals for their development pathway; it shows that our Members are ambitious and are setting their sights high. Please note: Areas which appear blank indicate where there are no skill levels applicable; for example, in business resilience there are no levels 2-4.

17 Personal professional development plan
Interest for a given skill – breakdown by category Here’s an example of how an organisation is able to view how its individuals have assessed themselves. This example shows an IOSH membership category breakdown, although as IOSH Blueprint is also available to non-IOSH members, anyone in an organisation can self-assess. Blueprint for business is still in a pilot phase and the non-member access is not being made public to anyone outside of the pilot organisations at this time. Benefits of using IOSH Blueprint for business are that it gives employers an overview of where OSH sits within their business, how it fits with their strategy and highlights areas needed for development.

18 Next steps: Delivering a knowledge library
IOSH resources Sharing third-party learning materials Analysing IOSH Blueprint data, and building and signposting to resources people say they need Delivering resources locally and globally Collaborating Going forward we are developing a knowledge library which will contain a variety of learning materials. IOSH is currently working with other 3rd parties with a view to building global non-OSH learning materials.

19 Next steps Working with organisations to develop a tool for business
Building a technical knowledge library Working with third parties to develop non-OSH learning materials Encouraging more members to use the tool So initially we are developing the business tool, and will be reviewing and consulting with our pilot organisations about how this implementation has gone. We are also continuing to map existing learning materials to build the knowledge library. And as always, we will continue to encourage our membership to self-assess with IOSH Blueprint.
