Charities In 2001 there were almost 200,000 registered charities in Britain – more than in any other country in the world. Most charities are very small – only 5% employ paid staff – but some are large and very well known. All the money that charities receive must be put back into their work.

The Law To be a charity an organisation must have one or more of the following aims: To relieve the poor, sick, disabled or the aged. To advance education. To advance religion. To provide a benefit for the community. A charity must help the public as a whole, and not individuals or small groups of people. It must not be political – for example by campaigning to change the law.

Good Causes In Britain, we give more money to animal charities than we give to children charities. In 200 an elderly woman left £7 million to a charity for dogs. A charity for hamsters reportedly has funds of nearly £10 million.

Why do people give to charities?

A Growing Problem More people are living in poverty today than at any time in history. The gap between rich and poor countries is greater now than it has ever been. A quarter of people who live on this planet are living in poverty. 1.2 billion people live on less than 65p per day.

Helping the Less Fortunate Money – provide money to help with emergencies such as famines. Help with basics – help poorer countries to improve their water supply, install electricity and build better roads. Training – give free advice and training to build new industries and more modern methods of production. Schools and hospitals – help the long term future by giving money for education and health. Task: Charity Leaflet You are going to create a campaign leaflet for a charity to encourage people to give money. Read through the case study on p109 for some ideas. You should also explain the aims of the charity and what it is trying to do with the money You should include some general info and history about the charity

My Charity 1.Invent your own charity. Give it a name and logo. 2.Explain who your charity helps and how. 3.Write a newspaper article to promote your charity. The article needs to convince readers to donate money to the charity.
