Public Sector Organisations As we all know because we looked at it at the beginning of the year, the public sector is run by the government for the people of the country. Examples include Schools, Police, Fire Stations, Hospitals, Local Councils etc. They all have a part to play in the running of the country.

How do they get money?

Total Tax Receipts 2006 £516 billion

Why Have A Public Sector... Private Businesses are about making money. Often the services provided in the public sector do not make money. In fact quite the opposite, they require funding in order to exist. It is therefore essential that the government provide a service for all that is free.

Schools Example Most schools are owned by the state, however some are not. These are called private schools. They charge parents money to send their children there. Usually £10,000+ a year. Most parents would not be able to afford this so if we only had private schools people would not be educated. There fore the government provides the alternative.

Task 1 / Plenary What is meant by a public sector organisation? Give 8 examples of public sector organisations. Why do public sector organisations exist? Where does the money come from to pay for these organisations? Give at least 4 examples.
