Defining Matter EQ: How can we identify a substance using a mathematical equation?

Warm Up In the year 1 B.C., King Hiero commissioned the creation of a golden crown. However, he didn’t believe that the goldsmith used all gold. He asked Archimedes to determine if the crown was solid gold. – Do you think Archimedes can determine if the crown is solid gold by putting it in water? Why or why not? – What happens to the level of the water if you submerge a crown in the water?

Vocabulary Preview – Mass – the amount of “stuff” or substance Measured in grams – Volume – the amount of space occupied by a substance Measured in cubic centimeters – Matter – Something that occupies space

Lab Materials Graduated Cylinder 25ml of water Metal dowels (1 2” brass, 1 2” aluminum, 1 4” aluminum Data Table

1.Measure the mass of the metal piece on a scale 2.Record the mass to the nearest tenth gram in your data table 3.Place 20mL of water in a 50 mL graduated cylinder 4.Record the exact volume of the water to the nearest tenth milliliter in your data table 5.Gently place a piece of metal in the graduated cylinder. Be careful not to splash any water. 6.Record the new volume in your data table. 7.Repeat the process with the other two metals.

Lab Questions The fourth column of the table is for the volume of the metal. How can you determine the volume of the metal from the data you have collected? Determine the volume of the three metal samples and enter the values in the table. How does the volume of the 2” long gold- colored rod compare with the 2” long silver colored rod?

Lab Questions (CONT) How does the volume of the 2” long silver colored rod compare with the 4” long silver colored rod? Which of the two metals has a greater mass in the same volume? Explain your thinking. The gold colored rod has a higher density than the silver colored rod. What do you think is meant by a higher density?

Lab Questions (Cont) Density is a characteristic of the substance, not of the size and shape. D = m/v Use your measurements to prove this statement and equation is true.

Conclusion Use the densities below to identify the type of metal for each rod: – Copper – 9.0 g/mL – Zinc – 7.1 g/mL – Gold g/mL – Aluminum g/mL – Brass g/ml The volume of a penny is 0.36 mL – is your penny made of gold?
