1 Density

2 What is density? Every object has a measureable features such as mass and volume. Density: The ratio of an objects mass to volume Mathematically  D = m / V

3 Density The mass of a substance can be measured using a balance.
Mass is a measure of a substances amount of matter.

4 Density (cont) Volume: how much space an object takes up
The volume of solid can be found 2 ways: 1) direct measurement – regularly shaped solid EX: L x W x H 2) water displacement – irregular shaped solid

5 Density Standards Water is considered to be a standard in terms of density. Water has a density of 1.00 g/mL. If an object floats in water, the object is less dense than water. If an object sinks in water, the object is more dense than water.

6 m = D x V V = m / D D = m / V Solving for Density
The formula for density is: D = m / V You can rearrange this using algebra to solve for both mass and volume!! m = D x V V = m / D

7 DENSITY TRIANGLE

8 Example #1: A 3.00 mL sample of water has a mass of 2.99 g. What is the density? D = m/V  D = (2.99g/3.00mL) Density = 0.99 g/mL Units for density are g/mL

9 Example #2 Oil has a density of 0.90 g/mL. If I have a 30 mL sample of oil, what would be the mass? m = V x D  m = (30mL x 𝑔 𝑚𝐿 ) [cancel mL units!] answer: 27 g Oil

10 Example #3: Aluminum has a density of 2.70 g/mL. If I have a sample of aluminum that has a mass of 5 g, what is the volume of the sample. V = m/D  V = (5 g ÷ 𝒈 𝒎𝑳 ) Volume = 1.85 mL
