Ms. Hanlon’s Science Classes
Density Ms. Hanlon’s Science Classes

Objectives Explain the components of the density equation and how to derive each item. Construct a density column and derive the density and volume of unknowns.

Demonstration

Formula

Formula Triangles

Density Density is a measure of how closely packed the atoms are within a substance. Density is a physical property of matter. Units of density are g/mL (liquid) or g/cm3 (solid)

Mass Mass is the amount of matter (number of atoms) within a substance. Mass is measured with a scale and recorded in grams.

Volume Volume is the amount of space a substance occupies.
Volume is measured in a graduated cylinder and is recorded in mL (liquid) or cm3 (solid).
