Chapter 10 Tobacco

3 harmful substances in tobacco Nicotine – the addictive drug found in tobacco. Carbon Monoxide – odorless, colorless, poisonous gas produced when tobacco is burned. Tar – A thick dark liquid that forms when tobacco is burned.

Forms of Tobacco Smoked (cigarettes, pipes, cigars) 2. Chewed (snuff, chew, dip)

Harmful effects from tobacco. Reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain. Coats the lungs and their inner structures with tar causing difficulty breathing. Causes fatty buildup around the heart and blood vessels. Increase risk of heart attack. Bad breath. Stains teeth. Dulls taste buds. Increased risk of mouth lung and throat cancer.

This is a smokers lung!

LUNG CANCER!!!

How does oxygen get into the bloodstream??? DIAPHRAGM contracts pulling oxygen into nose/mouth. Inhale OXYGEN through nose and mouth. Flows down the TRACHEA (AKA windpipe) Passes into the BRONCHI.. ALVEOLI fill with oxygen. CAPILLARIES surrounding the alveoli absorb oxygen and take into the bloodstream.

Myth: Smoking little cigars without inhaling is safe. Fact: Not inhaling? You’re still at risk for mouth and throat cancer. (Cigars contain the same toxic and carcinogenic compounds found in cigarettes; causes cancer of the lung, oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, and possibly the pancreas.)

A – Lungs B – Bronchi C – Nose D – Mouth E – Trachea F- Diaphragm

Tree(leaves)= Lungs Apples=Aveoli Trunk=Trachea Branches=Bronchi

Lungs The LUNGS are the MAIN ORGANS of the respiratory system. In the lungs oxygen is taken into the body and carbon dioxide is breathed out. The red blood cells are responsible for picking up the oxygen in the lungs and carrying the oxygen to all the body cells that need it.

Lungs The red blood cells drop off the oxygen to the body cells, then pick up the carbon dioxide which is a waste gas product produced by our cells. The red blood cells transport the carbon dioxide back to the lungs and we breathe it out when we exhale

Trachea The trachea is sometimes called the windpipe. The trachea filters the air we breathe and branches into the bronchi

Bronchi The bronchi are two air tubes that branches off of the trachea and carry air directly into the lungs.

Diaphragm Breathing starts with a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of the lungs called the diaphragm. When you breath in, the diaphragm contracts.

Factoids Your lungs contain almost 1500 miles of airways and over 300 million alveoli. Every minute you breathe in 13 pints of air.

Factoids Plants are our partners in breathing. We breathe in air, use the oxygen in it, and release carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Thank goodness! People tend to get more colds in the winter because we’re indoors more often and in close proximity to other people. When people sneeze, cough and even breathe—germs go flying!

Tobacco Addiction Addiction – a physical or psychological need for a drug or substance.

Kids that live with someone who smokes are 50% more likely to become a smoker themselves!

Why Teens Smoke Peer pressure. Parents or family member smokes. Curious Become more grown-up looking. Idolize someone that smokes.

WITHDRAWAL Unpleasant symptoms that occur when someone stops using an addictive substance. Ex. Anxious, irritable, depressed, tired.

Steps to kick the habit Make a list of reasons to quit. Set small goals. Avoid being around others that smoke. Change habits associated with smoking. Exercise when you feel an urge to smoke. Think positively. Eat healthy snacks instead of smoking.

Two types of dependency Physical dependency – A type of addiction on which the body feels a direct need for the drug. Psychological dependency – A type of addiction in which the mind send the body a message that it needs more of the drug.

Myth: Seems like most people smoke. Fact: Just the opposite. Nearly 80% of Ohioans do not smoke. Myth: Secondhand smoke isn't that dangerous. Fact: Secondhand smoke is deadly. Every ten minutes, it kills a non-smoker. Myth: "Light" cigarettes are safer for me than regular cigarettes. Fact: "Light" cigarettes contain the same amounts of tar and nicotine as regular cigarettes. They're called "light" so you think you're making a healthier decision smoking.

NICOTINE’S NEGATIVE EFFECTS Brain – Nicotine reaches the brain in about 20 seconds causing the heart rate to speed up. Heart – Increases heart rate by 33 beats per minute. Lungs – Inhaled into lungs and absorbed into the bloodstream. Circulatory System – Narrows blood vessels reducing oxygen flow to the body parts.

Secondhand smoke – Air that has been contaminated by smoke. Sidestream smoke – the smoke that comes from the tip of a burning cigarette pipe or cigar. Mainstream smoke – The smoke that the smoker inhales. Passive smoker – nonsmoker that breathes in secondhand smoke.

smokeless tobacco

1. Smokeless (spit) tobacco is tobacco that is placed inside the mouth in one of two forms: Snuff — ground-up moist tobacco usually placed between the bottom lip and gum. This is also referred to as "dipping". Chew — shredded tobacco leaves placed between the cheek and gum. This is also referred to as "a wad".

Effects of Smokeless Tobacco: Yellow teeth Bad Breath Cancer of mouth Stomach ulcers

FACTS Smokeless tobacco contains 6x the amount of cancer causing substances than cigarettes! 1 can of smokeless tobacco is = to 60 (3 packs) of cigarettes.
