The DiVA System: Current Status and Ongoing Development Uwe Klosa Electronic Publishing Centre, Uppsala University, Sweden Eva Müller Electronic Publishing Centre, Uppsala University, Sweden

DiVA (Academic Archive Online) Project started 2000 at Uppsala University, Sweden Objectives of the DiVA Project: –Development of technical solutions and work flows supporting full text publishing, storage and dissemination of university research –Explore ways to ensure future access, usability and understanding of digital objects in the archive 2006 – cooperation within 16 universities in Sweden(15) and Norway (1) Cooperation with the National Library from the very beginning

The DiVA System (1) fully operational since January 2003 built on Java and XML technologies Unicode is used in the whole system usage of open source where possible and appropriate consists of several modules –repository –publishing system and authoring tools –joint portal at –search services and dissemination services –dark archive

The DiVA System (2) work flows for printing and electronic publishing reuse of metadata submitted by the creator/author –web pages –title page and cover for printed version –dissemination (National Catalogue, OAI-PMH and RSS) full-text publication from XML (public available TOC and references)

The DiVA Consortium open to all universities and publicly financed research departments (not only in Scandinavia) clear terms of participation and good communication for ensuring efficiency and sustainability –user group meetings twice a year –helpdesk for administrators –Wiki with documentation and FAQ –mailing list and newsletter development budget localised web interface for each member

Collaboration collaboration with the National Library of Sweden from the very beginning –resolution service –archiving of metadata and documents research projects on the national and international level in these areas: –electronic publishing –long-term preservation, usability and access –content mark up in general collaboration with Elsevier (Scirus) collaboration with Urkund and GenuineText

Ongoing Development new complex object format based on DIDL or METS extension of current metadata model for new document types and other digital objects advanced metadata description –rights metadata –technical metadata –administrative metadata web based, flexible work flow system

Future Development enhanced and flexible repository solution (e.g. Fedora) supporting OAIS improved and more flexible work flow system extended metadata description sophisticated search and browse functionality on the document level advanced module for print on demand services tools for semantic mark up

Summary DiVA has been operational for over tree years next generation of DiVA is about to be born coming version entirely based on open source software and will incorporate new modules for storage, indexing and searching forming a consortium to ensure future development and operation of DiVA has shown to be a success to share knowledge, experience and costs is of great value
