Suspense in Non-Fiction… What are the three elements the reading discusses for building tension in the chart on page 137? (Think of this as a quiz)

Analyzing the Film for Suspense… During the final scenes of the film, the audience knows the outcome of the story. Why is it suspenseful than? Watch the film to notice the ways in which it manipulates the viewer’s emotions. As we play this sequence through make note of the:  Camera angles and shots…  Editing (remember that a director can play with time)  Music Make note of the mood and emotions implied by your element, notice where shifts happen in your element, be aware of the others and how your element interacts with those of others.

Assignment… Watch one television program or even commercial tonight and analyze one of the given elements contained within it. Use the sheet to help you pull apart (analyze) the screen. Think about “why” the director of your example is choosing to present the screen in this way. What are his/her objectives in doing so. Always remember: this manipulation of your emotions and reactions is always going on, look for it in whatever you see and you’ll find it.

Jim Lovell and Gene Kranz devise a new reason of this journey during the last 2 scenes: Discuss and identify the specific moment this happens for each.  Remember that the real reason is almost never a “physical” goal; rather, it is a spiritual or “internal” lesson. The Real Reason… Click picture for link. Play from 31:17 to 29:30
