Terminology & elements of film

Lighting and Colour Lighting often has an important role in shaping an audience’s response to particular scenes and characters in a film. In addition, lighting creates an appropriate mood or atmosphere. Light may be from the back of the subject (back lit), to one side (side lit), to the front (front lit) or evenly lit. In some films natural lighting is the norm.

Colour Colour and colour combinations are often associated with particular characters. Even the colours of costumes may influence our impression of a character (black and white - bad and good etc). (RED - Shindler’s List / Sixth Sense)

Music & Sound Music and sound effects can also create atmosphere. Moments of suspense, excitement, danger, conflict are often heightened when accompanied by music. Linking music is frequently used to connect one scene to another and to make the transition between scenes almost seamless.

Costume and make-up A director also carefully considers costume and makeup for every actor who appears on screen.
