WELCOME TO BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

A LITTLE ABOUT ME....  I have taught in the SMSD since 2008  I have 2 children. Dominic is 5 and is a kindergartner at Crestview Elementary and Kora “Rosie” is 2 ½.  Graduated from UMKC in Early Childhood Educaiton with Elementary and Early Childhood Certifications.  I love the Royals, Chiefs, KU basketball and spending time with my family and friends.

BEHAVIOR  Expectations  PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports)  What is the safe seat?  Buddy room? Another kindergarten room or Mrs. Douglas (1 st grade)  Cookie Jar

 Responsibility  Self control  Cooperation  Patience  How to make good choices  What we do when we don’t want to do something  To play and enjoy school What We Do in Kindergarten!

MYSTERY READER  Please sign up for a time to come read to our class. We do this every Monday from 2:30-2:50. The kids enjoy this time when they get to guess who the Mystery Reader is!  This is also a great opportunity for you to learn who your child spends his/her day with!  You don’t need to be an MVP to do this

REMEMBER…  Library books are due every Friday.  Wear tennis shoes everyday! Please do not send your child in flip-flops!  Work on learning to tie own shoes and zip own jacket and coats (test out the zippers before sending them to school if you can)!

REST TIME  Towels or small blanket  Children will have the choice of just resting or doing something quiet in their own space that I will provide for them.

READING/LANGUAGE ARTS  Sight words  Sounds  Rhyming  Read every night!  Daily journaling  Handwriting  Nonsense words (mip)  CVC words (dig)

MATH  Count to 100  Recognize numbers up to 100  Count by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s  Write numbers to 100  Sort, recognize shapes, colors  Add and subtract up to 10  Recognize “domino” dot patterns and say how many it is  Recognize more or less

OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO AT HOME  Practice cutting using scissors  Practice opening and closing Elmer’s glue  Practice using appropriate amounts of glue (white and stick glue)  Practice having your child write their name with lower case letters (except the first letter)  Use flash cards to increase their fluency of letters/number recognition  Make it a routine to check the Take-Home Folder every night

 The Star of the Week will create a poster with pictures and things he/she likes to do. This poster will be on display all week.  A note will be sent home when it is your child’s turn.  They will also be able to have a day for show and tell when it is their week. CELEBRITY OF THE WEEK

 Our traveling turtle (a stuffed animal) will go home with each student sometime this school year. Please write about his stay with your family. Your child will write one sentence about something they did together, as well as illustrate a picture. Please include any photos inside of the binder that your child can share with the class.

CONFERENCES  Sign up for a 20 minute time slot before leaving tonight.  Options are Wednesday, October 21 st evening, Thursday, October 22 nd day, and Friday, October 23 rd day.
