Conjunctions A conjunction joins words or groups of words Three Types: Coordinating Conjunctions Correlative Conjunctions Subordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating Conjunctions Join equal parts of a sentence And But Or Nor For So Yet Because Since While

Coordinating Conjunctions Examples: The students studied the novel and the poetry. I looked for her, but she left a long time ago. I need a new printer, because mine is misprinting my papers.

Correlative Conjunctions Conjunctions used in pairs Common Correlative Conjunctions: either…or neither…nor both…and not only…but also

Correlative Conjunctions Examples: Either the principal or the teacher will listen to your concern. Both the brother and the sister enjoyed the family reunion. Neither the cat nor dog want to go outside.

Subordinating Conjunctions Introduces a subordinate clause (a clause that cannot stand alone) We will talk more about these when we learn about clauses.

Interjections An interjection is a word that expresses emotion and has no grammatical relation to other words in the sentence Interjections that show strong emotion are followed by an exclamation point. Interjections that show mild emotion are followed by a comma.

Interjections Common Interjections: Examples: Well Ouch Wow Oh Well, I just don’t know. Ouch! That hurt!

Assignment On a separate sheet of paper please rewrite the following sentences. For every sentence you will have to identify every conjunction and its particular type. Extra credit if you can identify the interjections. Make sure to number the sentences.

I bought myself a new computer and a recycled printer. Either I am very thrifty or very stupid. Some might wonder why I would buy an old printer and a new computer.

4. My answer to this question is both simple and complex. I am both thrifty and very stupid. I try to save money yet I am constantly wasting it because I have to repair the machine.

One would think that I would swallow my pride and just buy a new printer. I really want a printer that is impressive and affordable.

Neither my wife nor I believe this dream to be practice, so I will just hope and wait for this product to be invented Oh! It will never happen or will it?
