Action Plan IISME/Intel CA Bay Area Research Collaborative Intel ISEF 2010 Educator Academy San Jose, California

2 High Level Goals Long Term: 1.At targeted high schools, shift culture of research as a valued asset for learning and instruction 2.Improve quality/quantity of inquiry research in STEM courses and clubs 3.At targeted high schools, improve participation in research competitions by 20% annually for 3 years

High Level Goals 3 Short Term: 1.Start 3 research clubs: 2 in FUHSD and 1 in SCUSD Mid-Year Update –FUHSD: 3 new research clubs/student research projects started (Fremont, Monta Vista, and Homestead H.S’s.) and the Lynbrook H.S. club expanded. –SCUSD: 1 new research club started at Santa Clara H.S. 2.Develop and implement an elective research course in SCUSD for the academic year Mid-Year Update –1 research course started at Wilcox H.S. with 6 students enrolled. 4-5 other students working on science fair projects outside course.

High Level Goals 4 Short Term ( continued ) 3.Intel/IISME will establish a Resource Bank: mentors, best practices, web resources, curriculum, etc. Mid-Year Update –Resource Bank established along with an Intel Online Community –Collaborative members met in September, 2010 –Best practices, success strategies, processes, etc. shared –Two experienced members led a tutorial on leveraging the Science Buddies website –Meeting content will be incorporated into the Resource Bank

High Level Goals 5 Short Term ( continued ) 4.Intel/IISME Research Collaborative team will utilize science research during instruction Mid-Year Update –All 12 collaborative members are utilizing science research/inquiry assignments with their students. –Examples: –Wilcox HS (SCUSD): 95 Physics are working on an investigation assignment as part of their curriculum. –Leadership HS (SJUSD Charter): 100 Biology students completed an inquiry lab addressing both physiology and experimental design. They will perform additional inquiry research activities throughout the year, culminating in a research project.

6 Objectives Success Measures –Increase student participation in research: courses, clubs, competitions by 20% annually for three years Mid-Year Update: All new clubs are in development stages –Online community and resource bank accessed by all collaborative participants amb participation survey Mid-Year Update: Online community and resource bank is in development stages –Increase inquiry projects within the classroom by 50% for collaborative teams based on self-report Mid-Year Update: projects underway but too soon to quantify.

Develop and implement an elective research course in SCUSD during the school day in Enrollment of ≥15 students in year one and ≥30 in year two. Replication of the course in subsequent years (2011 and 2012) Mid Year Update: 6 students enrolled as of 11/1/ students participating outside class. District/Site Leadership Craig Young Fall 2010, 2011, Intel/IISME will establish a Resource Bank including: mentors, best practices, web resources, curriculum, etc Development of a communication tool for all collaborative teachers to have access to this list and if mentors stick with the projects they are supporting. Mid Year Update: Intel online community developed and Resource Bank established IISME/Intel Participating Teachers Fall Intel/IISME Research Collaborative team will utilize science research during instruction Participating teachers survey Mid Year Update: Nearly 200 students have already participated in inquiry/research assignments during regular course instruction IISME Participating Teachers May 30, 2011

9 Intel ISEF Educator Academy Reflection Highlights of Educators Academy –Creativity and depth of students projects –Students often address a topic that is meaningful to them –Impressed with the rigor of the projects internationally –Bringing teachers in on Wednesday to help with buy-in Beneficial Shop Talks –Amanda Alonzo –Theresa Clark –Lois Fruen Missing Shop Talk Topics –More formal and informal time needed to collaborate with international participants –How to address schools and teachers questions about limited commitment and funding concerns –Open the online community to the teachers on their day –Make sure the teacher day falls at a time when teachers can access the floor
