dy/dan A blog that transformed the way I teach math.

The blog. Meet Dan Meyer. Dan is former high school math teacher and is currently a doctoral student at Stanford University. He has some cool ideas that, in my experience, are immediately relevant in the classroom. His blog is FULL of nerdy fun.

3acts (of a mathematical story) Act One Introduce the central conflict of your story/task clearly, visually, viscerally, using as few words as possible. Act Two The protagonist/student overcomes obstacles, looks for resources, and develops new tools. Act Three Resolve the conflict and set up a sequel/extension.

An example.

An example. Ask for questions. or Pose a question.

An example. When should you start bombarding the App Store if you want to win?

An example. What information would be useful to know here?

An example. What information would be useful to know here?

An example.

Many more examples!

Make your own. Or (even better?) have students make their own.

Lessons learned. Students need to be taught how to ask great mathematical questions. That takes some scaffolding, for sure. Dan is extremely technologically savvy. Use his stuff. You will be surprised at who gets really into these (and who doesn’t.) Extensions are awesome for everyone.

An update.
