Best Math Practices – Cooperative Learning East Central Educational Service Center April 23, 2014 Bill Reed - Secondary Math Specialist wreed@doe.in.gov

Three Goals of this Session 1.Quick update on Indiana Mathematics Standards and Assessments 2.Introduce and familiarize everyone with the IN – Mathematical Practices 3.Model Mathematics teaching methods and ideas you can use in your classroom tomorrow

Proposed Indiana College and Career Ready Math Standards  The Process  The People Involved  The Timelines  Next Steps  Assessment

ISTEP+ grades Mathematics Assessments Currently we use a Pass / Fail then Remediate System 2013 – 2014Continue with ISTEP+ and Algebra 1 ECA/GQE as in place 2012 – 2013 Still Using a Pass / Fail System but moving to more of a Growth Model System Moving from Fail, Pass and Pass+ to 5 to 8 Levels to show growth 2014 – 2015Continue with ISTEP+ and Pilot College and Career Ready Standards Assessment for 2015 – 20 16 in grades 3 – 8 Continue with Algebra 1 ECA/GQE as in 2013 – 2014 2015 – 2016College and Career Ready Standards Assessment

Be a Cheerleader for Mathematics and Your Students!!!  Stop allowing parents and others around you say “I could never do Math!”  Stop allowing others around you to wear “I am so bad at math!” as a badge of honor.  Tell your students “They can do Math” it may not be their favorite subject but “They can do Math!”  Send letters home to parents with suggestions of the math they do in their daily lives that apply to what their child is learning.  Do NOT let the students use the universal “I don’t know.” to get them from thinking or attempting the math.

Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Teachers MUST Change their Habits! Stop being the Conveyor and be a Facilitator! Require the students to Listen to each other! Don’t let your students use the “I don’t know.” response Use the word Why! As much as you possibly can with your students. Do not give Xerox assignments, make students think, apply, struggle and create in their assignments. Write test questions that ask for more than an answer.

Did I Accomplish the 3 Goals of this Session 1.Quick update on Indiana Mathematics Standards and Assessments 2.Introduce and familiarize everyone with the INCC – Mathematical Practices 3.Model Mathematics teaching methods and ideas you can use in your classroom tomorrow

Next Steps Continue to familiarize yourself with the Mathematical Practices. Set aside 15 minutes once a week to explore resources that may help you add to your lesson plans, engaging students to think and apply what you are teaching them. Once a week work specifically on breaking some old habits and creating new ones that will take your students to a whole new level. You are not in this alone! Use your colleagues! Ask for input and ideas. You already are ahead of the game as you are here attending this conference to get new ideas and learn new methods and information. Never Stop Learning!!!
