Customary Measurement

Customary Measurement The United States uses customary units. Many other countries use the Metric System. Examples of customary units include: inches, feet, yards, miles, cups, pints, quarts, gallons, ounces, pounds, and Fahrenheit temperature

Tools for Measuring Length We use certain tools for measuring length. Can you think of a tool we use to measure length? rulers, yard sticks, tape measures

Length We measure length in inches (in.), feet (ft), yards (yd), and miles (mi). Shorter lengths are measured in inches, feet, and yards. 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard

Customary Length Longer distances are measured in miles. It is about 1 mile from H.I.S. to Pizza Pro. It takes about 20 minutes to walk one mile. 5,280 feet = 1 mile 1,760 yards = 1 mile

What unit could you use? Would you use inches, feet, yards, or miles?

Let’s Practice!

How many inches are in a foot? 12

How many feet are in 1 yard? 3

How many yards are in 1 mile? 1,760

How many feet are in 1 mile? 5,280

If the ceiling in your bedroom is 4 yards high, how many feet is it?

If a turtle travels 10 yards in 1 hour, how many feet can it travel in 1 hour?

Name the four units we use for measuring length. inches, feet, yards, miles

Name 3 tools we use for measuring length. ruler, yard stick, tape measure

Choose the best answer for the height of a full grown tree. A.) 3 inches B.) 3 yards C.) 3 miles D.) 30 feet *D

Choose the best answer for the height of a stop sign. A.) 8 inches B.) 8 yards C.) 8 feet D.) 8 miles *C

Choose the best answer for the length of a bed. A.) 12 inches B.) 2 feet C.) 3 miles D.) 2 yards *D

Choose the best answer for the height of a building. A.) less than a yard B.) more than a yard C.) more than a mile D.) less than 8 feet *B

How long is a football field? A.) 100 yards B.) 100 miles C.) 10 yards D.) 10 inches *A

How high is a ceiling? A.) 3 feet B.) 3 yards C.) 12 inches D.) 10 yards *B

Customary Capacity Capacity is used to measure the volume of a container. How much can a container hold? We use fluid ounces (fl oz), cups (c), pints (pt), quarts (qt), and gallons (gal).

Tools for Measuring Capacity We use certain tools for measuring capacity. Can you think of any tools we use to measure capacity? measuring cups, teaspoon, tablespoon

Customary Capacity We use fluid ounces to measure very small amounts of liquid. Medicine in a medicine dropper would be measured in ounces. 8 fluid ounces = 1 cup

Customary Capacity 2 cups = 1 pint 2 pints = 1 quart This is one pint and one quart

Customary Capacity 4 quarts = 1 gallon

If you can draw this picture, you know capacity! Customary Capacity If you can draw this picture, you know capacity!

What unit could you use? Would you use fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, or gallons?

Let’s Practice!

Capacity is used to measure ________. volume

What is the smallest unit of measurement for capacity? fluid ounce

What is the largest unit of measurement for capacity? gallon

There are ____ fluid ounces in 1 cup. 8

There are _____ cups in 1 pint. 2

There are ___ pints in 1 quart. 2

There are ___ quarts in 1 gallon. 4

What units would you use to measure the amount of water in a large aquarium? gallons

What units would you use to measure the amount of water in a bathtub? gallons

What units would you use to measure the amount of medicine in a medicine dropper? fluid ounces

What units would you use to measure the amount of coffee in a coffee cup? cups

Can you draw the “G” picture?

Customary Weight Weight is the measure of how heavy an object is. We use ounces (oz), pounds (lb), and tons (T). We use scales to measure weight.

Tools for Measuring Weight Can you think of a tool that we use to measure the weight of an object? scale

Customary Weight 1 ounce = 16 ounces = 1 pound 2,000 pounds = 1 ton

What could you use? Would you use ounces, pounds, or tons?

Let’s Practice!

Give an example of an object that weighs about 1 ounce. strawberry

Give an example of an object that weighs about 1 pound. pineapple

Give an example of an object that weighs about one ton. car, small truck

How many ounces are in 1 pound? 16

How many pounds are in 1 ton? 2,000

Customary Temperature We use the Fahrenheit scale to measure temperature. A thermometer is the tool that measures temperature. Water Boils Room Temperature Water Freezes

Let’s Practice!

What is considered a normal temperature for a human body? 98.6 degrees

Water freezes at _____ degrees Fahrenheit.

Room temperature is _____ degrees Fahrenheit.

Water boils at ____ degrees Fahrenheit.

What would you wear to school if the temperature was 20 degrees Fahrenheit? Warm clothes – hat, gloves, coat

This morning the temperature was 30 degrees Fahrenheit This morning the temperature was 30 degrees Fahrenheit. This afternoon the temperature rose to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. By how much did the temperature increase? 5 degrees Fahrenheit

If a Fahrenheit thermometer shows 95 degrees, how would you describe the temperature? A.) cool B.) cold C.) warm D.) hot * D
