GOTHIC CATHEDRAL “We will build a cathedral, which the one who sees it could think we were crazy” (Canons of Seville, 1401)

The Muslim Mosque and the new religious building The original cathedral plan was an Almohade mosque, it was finished in 1198 Some of muslim remains are in the Orange Trees Patio (Patio de los Naranjos) The christian conquest changed the mosque, turning it into a cathedral The work began in 1433 and the most influential European artists were called to the city

The heart of the building The plant of the mosque was used to build the Cathedral, adding new rooms You can find some relevant parts in Seville’s Cathedral: Columbus Tomb, gothic doors…

Thanks to the vaults, the religious building was finished in 70 years. There are a lot of kinds of them: diagonal arch ribs, with spine… Saint Isidro’s Chapel Vaults are the most important ones

Pinnacles are on the ceiling of the Cathedral, some of them are from XV century (simples) and others from XVI c. (complex) It’s allowed to visit the ceiling and see the pinnacles with snail style
